Some Rotor and Pad questions
Some Rotor and Pad questions
I was going to just post on an old (HERE) but decided to just start another since that one was quite old and dealt with a different model year.
Had a free oil change, went in for that and the shop said I needed new rotors, below spec all around is what they wrote on my paper. When I asked about why they are recommending the replacement they stated simply that I was below the spec, not due to cracks, etc..
Rotors have ~70K miles on them, truck as ~140K miles
I went home and opened the manual for 08 Lariat F150 and came up with the below minimum rotor thickness.
Rear Min Thickness 0.722 inch
Front Min Thickness 1.122 inch
I measured my rotors face to face with a 0-1 inch micrometer for the rear and a 1-2 inch micrometer for the front, both calibrated and checked against a standard, at several locations around the rotor.
Average rotor thickness
0.778 inch rear passenger
0.776 inch rear driver
1.169 inch front passenger
1.197 inch front driver
Am I missing something, they do not appear to be below to me? Looks like I have give or take ~50 thou on the rears and ~40-70 thou on the fronts... and they look and feel in great shape.
While the rotors will continue to wear on this vehicle, I feel like I probably do not have to replace them just yet. Do you disagree?
Pads:
My pads are at or below the 0.118 inch minimum and I will replace those.
I also have one pad in the back which seems to have gotten hung up and is wearing at an angle anything to look for when I go to replace that one?
Was looking at the AKEBONO ACT1012 for the rear and AKEBONO ACT1011 for the front pads, price online (rockauto) is almost $40 cheaper than when I called into the local Advance..
Any thoughts?

Thanks, Good to hear they perform. We have Akebono pads on my wifes truck and they seem to have held up really well.
My pads will be here tomorrow. I went with the Akebono ones I listed.
I ended up getting them from Amazon, were only 2 dollars more than RockAuto but I saved on the shipping with prime.
I am not sure what to do with the rotors. I think I will just replace the pads and then continue to monitor them since they measure above spec and appear to be in good condition.
I'll update after I do the pads.

I changed the pads all around and kept the rotors, the akebono pads under the part numbers I listed in the previous post did not come with the sliders, clips or springs. Just FYI for anyone who uses this thread in the future.
I did find that the rear parking brakes (specifically the actuator levers on the rear wheels) were seized up and had to be freed up, springs replaced, etc. Left Rear seemed to appear that it was dragging for some time.

Well, did you have the oil change done at a dealership? Or a general garage/shop? What you got, is what's called "Uping the Volume". "Sell more Labor", "Sell more Parts". If they believe it close to marginal, they will try to sell you. Been there, Done that. It's all about uping the bottom line. Free oil changes are a way to get a customer into the shop, then sell, sell, sell. Not all "garages" operate in this Fashion, but it is more common than you might think. I have free oil changes for life on my truck. Every time I take her in, there is an issue with "something". My rotors are getting grooved. Or my pads are "Marginal", they should be replaced. "We checked your alignment and it's out of spec.". "Your wiper blades are streaking, We can replace those.". "It's time to change your antifreeze.". This was a good one. I was only at about 40,000 miles. I said no. I got home and for kicks I checked my manual and it said at 100,000 miles, Lol.... Just saying. As for your pads uneven wear, I know on some, like on my '11 F150, the front pads are "Inner/Outer" specific. The front inner pads have two small "Ears" that are suppose to be where the front caliper cylinder bores press against. So I would double check that....
