getting new rims/do I need to replace TPMs?

Just ordered some new rims for my 2011 Lariat SuperCrew. Had 18's and am bumping up to 20's. Haven't been able to ask my installer yet if I need to buy new tire pressure sensors or if I can use existing and remove. I'm getting the Ultra Maverick rims and website note says for that rim the sensors are not compatible with oem TPMs so I need to buy a set of new. Called them and got some uninformed sales dork who wasn't very convincing.

So I'm curious if anyone here has been able to remove (or had installer remove) the oem TPMs on place on a new set of rims. Are all TPM's able to be installed on any rim?

Thx!

I think OEM tpms sensors will fit on most aftermarket wheels, but aftermarket tpms sensors are not always compatible with the OEM tpms system even if they fit on the wheel. People often take their tpms sensors off of their factory wheels when getting new ones, so I imagine they do it to put them on the new wheels.

But obviously I'm not certain. Someone else will have dealt with this and can tell your for sure.

Thanks! Just had another (imo more reputable) dealer tell me my oem TPMs can be removed and installed on new rims. So that's the plan. Said worst case I'll need new valves but installer can take care of those at minimal cost. I'll report back if I have problem.

Sounds good! Make sure to report back with whether or not they work and if you needed new valves so others can use this info in the future.

The TPMS can be moved to the new wheels. However what is needed is a valve stem that can have the sensor attached. I would expect, that the tire dealer will have them, however if not, they can be had at the dealer. The sensors are screwed to the valve stems.

They look like this, but can also be had in the hard type that screws onto the wheel.

UPDATE w/resolution: Installer removed my factory TPM's and installed them on my new wheels with no issue and did not even need to replace the valve stems. So it was super easy. BEWARE of tire and wheel websites that tell you you MUST put new ones on. Not true, as per my experience.

Also, anyone looking for wheels, got an amazing deal at tirebuyer.com, free shipping on my DOORSTEP in only two days and I am VERY happy with results. Highly recommended.

Rock on

Are you saying he reused the old valve stems. It is my understanding that is a big no no.

It's not necessarily a big no-no, but it's a sound thing to do when replacing tires.

Hmm - how did he reuse valve stems from one set of rims to another set? That does sound bad.

The only ones I have seen that are really reusable are the all metal ones that use washers and have a nut(s) to screw onto the valve stem threads. And even then, you never reuse the washers/gaskets.
On a rubber valve stem, the internals can easily be damages by being pulled through and bent/damaged doing it. I am talking about the non-removable internals.

Hmm that does sound like a potential no-no when you mention that . . . but oh well.
