Im sure this topic has been beaten to death but ive tried researching offset and backspacing and i just dont understand. So i have an 04 f150 xlt 2wd no lift yet im getting the xd spys 17x8 what backspacing and offset do i want? I will be lifting to 6 inches maybe squeeze in 8 inches later on with 35s right now ill have 265/70/17 so no worries about rubbing. I would like the tires to stick out of the wheel well so dont kill me for asking this newbie question lol, thanks

17x8 looks like it is available in +18 and -12 offset. You want at least 4.5 inches of back spacing and both of those are fine. the +18 wont stick out of the fender, but the -12 will, barely.
the more you push the wheel out of the fender, the more problems you have with rubbing
all that being said, if you are seriously considering a big lift and tires later on you need to pick a rim that is at least 9 or even 10 inches wide. a 12.5 or 13.5 inch wide tire (which is needed to look right on a 6 or 8 inch lift) will just give you problems on an 8 inch wide wheel.
any other questions feel free to ask

Alright sticking out of the fender isnt a huge deal, i just like the look better, i think they make the xd spys in a 17x9 so ill talk to the guys at discount tire and see if i can do that instead, im getting a pretty good deal of 150$ apiece and 150$ in rebates so like 660$ out the door, do i always want to choose the negative offset?

just about all of those type of wheels will have at least 4.5 inches of back spacing, thats the key.
your truck being 2wd with that size of tire and a wide wheel with negative offset might cause some rubbing right now though. is your truck leveled?
negative offset pushes the wheel outwards, which gets the looks, but will cause rubbing issues, especially how your truck sits now. but in my opinion it looks pretty weird when lifted trucks have tires that are sunk inside the fenders, almost like stilts.
if discount tire will mount the wheel for you before you buy, id see how bad a 17x9 rubs now and go from there

Well if it does rub ill get the sawzall out, but i dont think it will, the guy before me put lariat 18 inch rims with 285/65/18s on it which is a whole inch bigger and a lot wider than what im going down to 265/70/17. So 4.5bs and negative offset around -12??

the backspacing and the -12 or +18 is the same thing essentially just in metric
the thing here is that you may be going with a 265 mm width tire instead of a 285, but that is irrelevant because the lariat wheel is 7.5 inches wide with like a +45 offset. your new wheels are going to be 8 or 9 inches wide and have a lot lower offset, meaning the wheel will be pushed out further toward the fender where it will rub.
