HELP!! Colorado Emissions Sucks!!

This may sound ridiculous, but just wanted to find out if the is anybody in the Denver/Arvada area that is willing to let me borrow their spare tire for an afternoon. I have 37" tires on my truck and I cannot get my vehicle emissions tested or registered here in the state of Colorado without 34" or less tires. If you could help me out that would be great. I'd be willing to buy a 12 pack or whatever if you could help me out. Thank you!!!!!!

I'm on the other side of the country so I can't help with the spare, but I wonder why they would require you to have 34" tires or less to register/test the vehicle. Is it legal there to have a vehicle with 35"+ tires?

yes, it is legal to have larger tires but for their emission test they told me their equipment is not set up to handle anything over a 34" tire. Very frustrating! And honestly don't want to go out and buy a new set of tires for a 15 minute test.

If they are giving it an emissions check, why does the tire size matter? They aren't removing and balancing it? I don't understand why the tire size matters.

Emissions/safety inspection is my guess. Title is a misnomer.

because they have some roller they need to put it on and they told me that it is not safe for them to operate their equipment with anything larger than a 34" tire. Don't know why and it seems ridiculous to me, but I guess these are the fun things you learn moving to a new state. Glad Michigan didn't have this stupid emissions crap.

Also I would just need to borrow one other spare as the people at the testing facility said that I only need to have the 34" or smaller tires on the rear of my truck. This is why I don't want to buy new ones when I just need 1 for a 15 minute test. Thanks!!

I wish I could help but we've got different bolt patterns. Try craigslist you may be able to find someone selling a spare cheap?

**personal gripe about emissions here** I was able to pass the tailpipe and visual 2 years ago with the LT headers and 2 hd cats (magnaflow 94106 would not pass). Last summer with the same set up I passed the tail pipe but failed the visual because factory says i have 4 cats and I only have 2. Welded on 2 hollowed out cats, went back and passed...

Best of luck.

Right as you pull up let enough air out of the tires to make them 34" and pull in slow? Then pull out and use a portable compressor to fill them back up?

I don't see why this wouldn't work as long as you aren't going very far and they aren't doing crazy stuff with your truck like a dyno...

Seriously though, write your local legislation and tell them how ridiculous that is.

One time when I took my 2003 FX4 in for an emissions test in Colorado, my tires were quite the subject. I have 33's, just one size bigger than stock 31's. I think they called the supervisor's supervisor who finally ok'ed it with quite a bit of consternation.

Last year they took a tape measure to my tires, then asked if I had a lift kit (truck is stock). I got a few funny looks but they ran it.

As usual, the truck got a 'fast-pass' meaning the emissions were basically too low for their machine to read.

I would be glad to help but we have different bolt patterns. +1 to buying a Craigslist spare, or check one of the many local salvage yards for a good spare.

Another option in Colorado: Make sure you drive by the mobile emissions stations that are setup on various on-ramps. Do it 3-4 times a year. These dumb things read your license plate and check your emissions when you drive by.

If you do it often enough, you never have to go to the emissions station... but you DON'T save the $25 fee. They charge that with your registration anyway.

I make a special effort to drive by the stations in Boulder near my work, at least once a month, so I can avoid the e-test fiasco altogether.
