Question Can I change my 17" wheel to a 16"?

I am buying some new wheels and tires for my '97 4x4 and have stock 17" wheels on 265/70/17. My question is can I change to a 16" wheel? I don't have too many options for wheels and tires without spending over $2000. With a 16" wheel I have many more options. Thanks.

backspacing

A 16" wheel would work fine as long as it has at least 4.5" of backspacing. A 15" wheel would not work since the brakes will not fit inside. I am going with the eagle alloy series 143 in a 16x10 size. There are a lot more tires out there for the 16". By the way, shop around a little. I'm getting the wheels for 519.80, including lugs. I'm putting on 315/75/R16 Goodyear Mtr's for about 770 plus 44 for mounting and balancing. So total, i'm spending about 1340, much less than you're proposed 2000. oh yeah, i had the stock 17's as well.
