265-70r17 can I go wider?

I have an 2003 F-150 FX4 OffRoad with the 5.4 in it. Went to walmart today to get a hole repaired in the tire, but the wouldn't because I'm below tread depth. Now, my question for you all...

What size of tires can I put on it? I would like maybe a little taller or wider tire with a little more traction than the LT tires had. I also live on an OLD farm with buildings that are falling appart and the old wooden shingles keep ending up in the yard, thus nails seem to be finding the tires too quickly.

I don't understand tire sizes, so I'm asking...

I'm guessing I could do a 285, which is a taller tire, but would the 70 change to like a 80 or 85?

I appreciate your help.

Tim

I forgot to mention... I pull an 18ft flat bed trailer about twice a month. And about four times a year, I pull a 20ft gooseneck cattle trailer or a 20ft gooseneck flatbed trailer. I am setup with a gooseneck hitch in the back of my truck.

Thanks

A 285/70-17 (33x11.50) will be your best bet. They will be about and inch taller and an inch wider than your current tires
