265/70s on 8.5" wide wheel?

will a 265/70r17 tire fit on a 17"x8.5" rim

You should be fine. As an example, BFG AT specs state 7-8.5" wide wheels. You might check the specs on the brand you are mounting. Each manufacturer's site usually lists those kind of specs.
