Many of us changed the pads. I did mine at 11,000 miles, couldn't take it anymore. I have put 76,000 on my Wagner ThermoQuiets, and could not be happier. Just replace your factory pads with a high quality semi-metallic. The TQs or Car Quest Blues work well.

If you want to cut down on brake dust, switch to a ceramic pad.

Another vote for Wagner Thermo Queits.....had them on for almost a year and no complaints. Very little brake dust.

I have been dealing with the same issue, for along time now. I really dont want to spend the cash on new pads when my truck dont have but 15000 miles on it. But also I have expensive wheels that are being hurt. hmm all i can say is i feel your pain brother.

Just wash them at least once a week and they should be fine.

I know on my moms car ( 2003 expedition) it has horrible brake dust...even with new pads...not sure what she had put on though...but she talked to the dealership and they told her there is a piece that you can put on the brakes somewhere that blocks the dust...from what she told me that the dealership told her, that the earlier vehicles came with this dust protection but since like 02 they havent...something like that. i didnt talk to the dealership my self so i cant guarantee any of it...but i do know there is a piece that you can buy and put it on that blocks dust. just an idea...look into it, that may be the way you want to go.

it's called brake dust shield. i used to wash my wheels every weekend because the dust was just too horrible. i take in about 300-350 miles a week in a stop and go traffic. i bought CarQuest blues semi-metallics and i can go about 3-4 weeks and the dust does not even come close to a week's worth of dust with the oem brakes. the braking is just as well as the oem. one of the worthwhile investment ive made!

Does the dust shield cause a heat buld up around the brakes and how well will they work with the oem pads?

I dont know about the heat part but im sure it would be fine with OEM pads heat because the dealership recomended them...now they are expensive for the dealership to do it but im sure you can find some where else or even do it your self. not sure what it takes to do it though.

Why mess with a dust shield when quality pads will solve the problem? Put Wagner ThermoQuiets or CarQuest Blues on and you have a long life pad that brakes great and so little dust, you won't notice it. I have 69,000 on my Wagners and have about 1/3 of the pad left.
