How much heat can a hub take??

I have a 05 Lariat (4x4). The other day my front d.s. brake hung up when I was about a mile or so from home...or at least that is when I noticed it. When I got home the whole wheel end was pretty warm. The wheel was hot enough that I could just put my hand on it and hold it there for 3-5 sec before I had to pull it away. I fixed the brake problem but I was wondering if the heat caused any other problems? Is there anything anyone can recommend checking? Externally all the CV boots and ball joints look good. I guess I am wondering more internally in the hub. Winter is around the corner and I want to make sure I can make it to my favorite fishing spots on the ice.

Thanks for the help.

if you cold hold your hand on it then it is fine. To get to the point to change the properties of the metal it would need to be beyond cherry-red (at which point more any contact would immediately burn you)
