Bigger tires on stock rim question

Can anyone tell me what the biggest tire I can put on my 05 xlt 4wd supercab without getting a leveling kit? It has the stock 255/70-17 on it now, but I want to get a tire with some more beef to it. Using the stock rims as well. I'm sure this has been asked a million times, but I'm still confused on tire sizing.

You're right, it has been asked about a million times, so a little bit of searching and you can find what you're looking for and more . Anyway, to answer your question I would stick in the neighbor hood of a 285/70R17 (33x11.5) or smaller =

You could fit a 33x12.50 using the oem wheels.
