Aftermarket Wheels+Winter=Problems?
I am waiting for a set of 18x9 Cast Black Pro Comp 7005's to be delivered by UPS. The one thing i forget to inquire about before ordering them was how they hold up in the winter. I live in NH and we get some pretty bad winters some years, and they throw down lots of salt and sand. I know the best bet is to just put the stock wheels back on in the winter, but i'll be selling those so thats not an option. Does anybody have experience with these type of wheels in the winter? Will i have lots of problems?
X2. If you really hafto sell them, then go buy some cheap steelys off craigslist for cheap and throw some good ATs on them. You'll be kicking yourself if you dont.
Well thats a bummer
. Just knowing i spent all this money and i'm not even going to be able to use them pretty soon, kind of a waste. I should of just bought tires for the stock rims (which was my first idea) and forgot about the wheels, money could of been used elsewhere. I guess i just assumed since the wheels are black and not chrome that i wouldnt have to worry as much.
And the reason i want to sell my stock wheels is because i dont have a garage, so i have no where to store them. I've been searching the internet and reading a lot of different things about this situation. It seems a lot of people do say if your gonna run aftermarket wheels in the winter, blacks the way to go. But who knows, one person says one thing and anothers says another. If anyone that runs wheels in the winter wants to chime in, i'd appreciate it. And to the guys above, thanks for responding.

road salt is the killer... i live near buffalo, ny and we get some nasty lake effect snow here, so the highway dept loves to coat the roads in salt even before the snow starts falling. I had polished rims on my old zr2, ran them thru one winter and it just about destroyed them, spent a ton of money on different products to try and clean them, but nothing really worked. if you can't keep the stockers and don't have the $ to buy steelies, then i'd be sure to at least rinse (if not, wash) those rims every other day during the winter months... i know, a pain in the @$$, but it'll be worth it.
I just bought the same wheels.
If anyone has had any experience with the procomp cast blast finish and winter roads please chime in!?
I've heard the cast blast is a little better than polished or even chrome? Guess I'll find out.

Always run a winter tire/stock rim setup in the winter time in your in the midwest/northeast. you know how bad the winters can get.
go to craigslist or ebay and pick up some el cheapo's man. dont destroy your new rims right away. unless you like washing your rims when its -15 below with a chance of snow in the afternoon.

Washing them every other day would suck thats for sure, especially in cold weather. And it would also suck to have them ruined after one winter.
Wow out of all the research i did and questions i asked to buy these wheels and tires, i forgot this one thing. Really sucks!!!! Spending all this money, almost 2 grand, to find out my best bet is to take them off in the winter....ouch!! Such is life i suppose.
I almost want to just return the wheels and put the tires i bought on my stock rims. But i cant return them without paying shipping, and a 15% restocking fee. And my stock rims are 17's, so the BFG 305/65/18's i got wont fit on them. And i cant return the tires because i did cash and carry and it says right on my receipt no returns.
Well i suppose i have a few months to figure it out still.

Winter is definetly something i overlooked. But my wheels will be here tomorrow or wednesday, and my tires are already sitting here along with my leveling kit. So at least i can get it all put on by the end of the week and enjoy them for a few months. This will be my first aftermarket wheel and tire setup, so i have no experience with this. And seeing as how everyone is suggesting not to run them in the winter, i think i will have to get another set. I'll definetly have to start pinching pennies though, put off some other mods i wanna do and do this first.
One thing i was thinking of... was tracking down some 18" Fx4 wheels, and just selling my 17" XLT wheels so i could use the BFG's i just bought. Would it be silly to just dismount the tires from the aftermarket wheels and mount them on the Fx4 wheels when winter comes (assuming i can find some cheap)?

At least this way i wouldnt have to spend over a grand for some more tires. Again assuming i can find some cheap OEM's.
you wouldnt even need to spend a grand on winter tires. I will be picking up a set of General Grabber AT2's this fall to put on my stock rims and turn them into a winter only set, that way i can get rid of these AmericaTrac's and when spring rolls back around i can finally mount up my nice set of rims & tires.
