Best tire size for FX4 rim?

So I've got a set of FX4 rims, these ones:

On the way and I'd like to know what the best tire size is for them. I do not want to level the front of my truck because I like the rake, and I also don't want to have any rubbing issues.

You can go up to a 33" tire without a leveling kit.

Would anything smaller then a 33'' look small in the well?

Also... what is 33'' in terms of the 275/55/18 way to measure?

And one last thing... was looking on Tirerack.com... they have BFGoodrich Rugged Trail T/A's for $116. I was under the impression that those are great tires... any reason for them being so cheap compared to other tires?

An 275/70R18 or 285/65R18 would be about 33". On the Rugged trails, they do have a 275/70R18, but it is a p-series tire, not an LT. That is why they are cheaper. I personally do not like P-series tires on an F150. They are at their max load carrying ability and the sidewalls are too soft for my taste.. BFG ATs are made in the LT285/65R18 in a LR E tire. A bit of overkill for an F150, but usable. It does recommend an 8" wide wheel, and the FX4s are 7.5". You could use them safely, although you might get a little more wear in the center of the tread. You would have to run those tires at about 45-50 psi (they are max 80). The rugged trails would have to be run at 36, their max pressure.

A 285/65-18 is basically a 33x11.50-18 tire. I'd go with those or a 33x12.50-18. The BFG 305/65-18 (34x12.50) would be the largest I would try and you may have slight rubbing with those.

Will there be a drastic change in performance/mpg when I'm switching to a 30''+ tire from the stock 17'' General?

Also, what would the next few sizes down from a 33'' tire be? Is there 32'', 31'', ect. that would fit? Does it look odd?

Reason I ask is because my truck is mostly street driven... so I'm mostly going for that appearance (I know bigger rims and a rear-drop would better achieve this look), but I'd like to keep some winter ability as well for the NE snowstorms.

I agree the 285x65x18 BFG is the one to go with, they are a heavier and stronger tire than the stocker's and may ride a little rougher but they are long wearing and are great in all weather condition's. I love mine

A 275/65/18 is about 32" and a 285/60/18 is around 31.5". These 2 sizes are also alot cheaper than the 285/65/18's.
