Stuck E-Brake:Smoking tire/rim
Last week when I went for a ride my e-brake got stuck.
When I got home and parked the truck, my left rear wheel was smoking and there was this stench of burned rubber.
The rim was extremely hot, so hot that I couldn't touch it for over an hour.
The rim and tire looks to be fine but I put the spare on just in case.
Should I getting the tire checked?
What else should I check after the rim got so hot?
I just got my brakepads replaced, have they suffered you think.
There is no problem with braking.
The truck drives like it did before.
Brake fluid! Could it be gotten overheated?
I fixed the e-brake, it's not stuck anymore.
My truck is a 1999 reg cab.
Anyone have pics or links how this e-brake is put together.
TIA

I'd do a quick bleed to push some of the fluid out at that wheel. Just enough to clear out the caliper should do it. A full bleed won't hurt.
I doubt you got it hot enough to reduce the strength of the wheel.
FYI - if it ever happens again... when you get home spray it down with some water. The heat is all in the rotor and it would be beneficial to cool it down before the heat migrates out to the wheel. Start with a light spray and then gradually increase the spray till its nice and cool.

I'm not sure I would recomend spraying water on red hot brakes....Great way to warp the ******* out of them.
This is a common problem on these trucks. I actually had the same problem as you but I caught it way earlier.
This is caused by the lever on the E brake seizing big time. You can check the brakes all you want but these trucks actually have a separate drum brake in the hub. You need to take the caliper off and then the disc. You will see an old fashioned drum brake. The lever that connects to the e brake cable will be completely siezed and so frozen that you will think that its riveted. Its not its supposed to be free and moving.
You should either replace or separate and wire brush these parts. Slop on the anti seize and put some new shoes on the e brake and you should probably put on some new pads on the calipers too.
There is a TSB for this problem listed as vibration while driving.
Good luck.
