Lariat Born Yesterday in Detroit
Lariat Born Yesterday in Detroit
I have a stock supercrew 4x4 Lariat on order. I'm going to add the AS 2.5 level.I want to add Moto 951's and either BFG A/T or BFG M/T. Which back space for the rims is best, and what is the largest tire that will fit without problems?Would it be worth while to add a larger block in the back also?
I currently run BFG A/T (285's) on stock FX4 rims on my '05 FX4 with no issues, but would like to fill the wheel wells on the new truck a little more.
I'll go with 35's IF they'll fit OK.
Is there really any noticeable difference between the 5.71 and 6.18 B/S?
Hopefully the Guru (Wandell) will chime in on this one.
Thanks to anyone who can help or supply pics of these setups.

I'd go with the 18x9 inch model with 5.71 inches of backspacing. They will stick out almost 1/2 inch farther than the version with 6.18 inches of bs. I'd go with a 33x12.50-18 or a 325/60-18 (33x13.00) tire.
Wandell, will the 325/60/18s fit on the 18" chrome clad aluminum wheels that come on the XLT and Lariat chrome package models? I can't find anywhere the wheel width for the stock 18s, and some people have said the max tire width is 305, others have said 315, but I haven't found a clear answer, and if a 305-325 series tire will "bubble over" the rim too much.
Thanks man, perhaps a 305/60 would fit on stock 18's? I want a wider tire but i love my stock wheels. I'm currently running stock BFG ATs 275/65, so I think if 305s could fit, a 60 series tire would keep my sidewall height similar to stock and not affect the speedo much, yet still give me the wider look (especially with maybe a "squared, blockier" tire like Toyo ATs). Thanks again for your help Wandell.

Another vote for the 305s. That seems to be the popular way of doing it with stock 18s and a leveling kit.
However, the whole "whats too wide for a stock rim" debate will be around forever. Plenty of people run 12.50s on the stock 15x7.5s on the pre-97' trucks with no issues. Same as running a 325 on stock 18x7.5s now.

Cool, now the question is what are my brand options? I went to discount tire direct, tire rack, and several other sites, and not much comes up. A few sites had BFG MTs, and one site had the ATs, but for 305/65/18, I can't find anyone who carries Toyo Open Countries, or what I really wanted to go with, Nitto Terra Graps.
The 305's will look and run great on the leveled truck. BFG muds in a 35x12.5 will also run great too. I have had them both and the 35's actually rub less than the 305's did for some reason. I would try discount tire. They are who I bought both of these sets of tires from. They will beat any price and if you are any good at negotiating you should get a good deal. Take a look at my Gallery , 2.5 As 20x9 mm951 305/55R20 Nitto Terra grapplers, i think i could have went with a 35/12.5R20 with trimming if i were to do it again

That is if that's how the tire is measured, but I don't see your M/Ts hanging over the rim a ton. I'm confused on that I guess. I think I like what I see though with your truck I wanted to go with the 2" kit, but I think I am going to go with the Hell Bent Steel 2.5" and Skyjacker AAL. I think that should give me plenty of room to clear the shoes and retain some gap instead of completely filling in the fender wells.

Just for a little tire info. The BFG mud terrian is the smallest spec size 35. By this I mean its really a 34.8 by 12.2. And not to mention that the tread pattern is a little narrower at the tread so the tread its self is only like a 11 to 11.5 inches wide, where as the tread on the 305's were almost 12 inches across hint the little extra rubbing. The tread on the all terrian goes almost straight up from the sidewall where as the muds indent a little before the tread. In my opinion I would stick to the 2" leveling kit for I have already had one ball joint replaced and I have had the kit for about 25, 000 and the angles only increase with the higher kit. I just had my tires rotated for the third time the other day. I am pushing about 17,000 on my muds and they still look brand new, the tire guy told me he would not be surprised if I got well over 50 out of them. i run them at 40 psi and they hardly rub ever, but sometimes rarely but sometimes at full crank they rub. The 305's were a E rated tire so they actually weighed more than the D rated Muds' by this I am talking about ply rating or how thick the tire is, so I actually experience about the same gas mileage with 35's as I did with the 305's. hopes this helps, if you have any more questions feel free to ask, O also I dont know if you tow anything or not but I have a 18 ft Ranger bass boat and it tows it with zero issues witht the 35's. Good luck
