A/T Tire VS. M/T Tire

Since there are all types of members on this board that run all different types of tires, I wanted to get some input on the all mighty question. Which is a better tire to run if you want great on road performance but don't want to sacrifice off road performance/inclement weather performance either (and vice versa). I had Dueler A/T REVO's on my Jeep and loved them, but am thinking about going with either BFG A/T, BFG M/T, or Toyo M/T. I have been reading stuff on the net about A/T tires handling like trash in the snow and mud, but I also hear that M/T tires handle terrible in the rain. How do you decide which one to concentrate on?

Having owned both bfg's before I think the at is the better tire for most people. The mud tire is a great tire that lasts a long time, but it's still pretty loud on the road and wears quicker than the at. It really depends on the type of terrain you drive in. I've worn out many sets of mud tires in the last 27 years and have to say looking back that a good at could have done the same job. The goodyear mt/r was a good compromise tire. Still after 40,000 it was loud and gave a rough ride. It was high dollar on the front end, too. The revo is a great tire and probably going to be my next set. IMO it goes as well as the bfg and is quieter on the road. If you really need the mud tire, then by all means get it. But, if you're like most people and spend very little time in true off-road situations a good at may suit you better. It's a tough call that only you can make in the end. I will say that the at is far superior in normal road driving. Some of the mud tires now have rain siping and this has probably helped out a lot in their rain performance. I, personally, would rather have an at over an mt any day as a road tire. This includes driving in any inclement weather whatsoever. Best of luck to you.

For everyday driving it's hard to beat the AT's, if you do a lot of offroading or want a tire just for the look's, go with the MT. My BFG AT's are great for me, ride good on the highway and doing some minor offroading I'm well satisifed with them.

I think I like the A/T better, just was unsure because I read mixed reviews on the net about snow/mud conditions and the tire not performing well. Any of these negative experiences? (even rain for that matter?)

my dad had a set of bfg a/t s that lasted a LONG time!! he always kept them balanced and rotated every 6xxx miles and he drove them everywhere on/off road- i would have bought them for my screw but i didnt have the $$ to put them on at the time as i needed tires back in Nov. When I get my t-bars cranked I'm going w/ a set of BFG A/T s in a 285/70/17.

You should try the Pro Comp Extreame A/T. They handle great on and off road.

^I actually thought about that, a buddy of mine has a wrangler with a 4" Rough Country with 33'' pro comp A/T's, they look nice but for some reason I just was always turned on more by BFG. Nice truck by the way, talk about "Big Red".

I agree you should try out the Xtreme A/T's. I had a set and they were great, IMO you get the best of both worlds an agressive A/T tire with a look almost of that of a M/T.

This was back when I had the Xtreme's

I have used both BFGs. The ATs will outperform the Mts on every conceivable road surface weather it be snow ice rain or dry. The MTs will outperform the ATs on every off road surface except sand and at that it is very close. I have to modify my on road driving to suit the Mts weak points. Off road I do not. If I were you I would try the ATs. When you finally get stuck off road then decide if if you made the right choice. FYI my next set will be BFG Mts but I will get them siped for the street. Presently I have a set of bald Mts on the truck. You can solicit opinoins but in the end yours is the only one that counts. It might take you a few sets of tires to decide what brand you like. It will take at least that to decide if you want AT or MT tires.

Check this out. It explains siping. http://www.kaltire.com/retail/services/siping.php
The KM2 is just the next step in improving the Mud Terrain tire.

Another aggressive a/t tire is the Mickey Thompson ATZ 4 rib. It is already siped and is fairly aggressive.

My buddy had a set of Bfg a/t on his Dodge 2500 Cummins and i cant remember him ever getting stuck. He took it through snow drifts, creeks, and some pretty good mud. Of course, that was with Cummins power!!
