Brake fluid flush and exchange

Does anyone know the brake fluid capacity for a 2001 f150 supercrew and recommendations for a self bleeding system. I can't say I understand the mechanics of it. Called 2-3 local Ford dealerships / parts and inquired about capacity and nobody had a clue. The only thing they could tell me was that the ford brake fluid was $4.95 a pint. Can't find my owners manual now or else I could look up the capacity. Thanks

I'm not sure of the exact size. But I'd estimate it at around 1000 CCs. This is approximately a quart. It could be more depending on how big the reservoir is. Some of the Ford reservoirs are rather large depending on what requirement Ford was mandating at the time. (sometimes they want really high protected volumes like 8-10 times the federal requirements)

So if you buy like 2 quarts of brake fluid you should have enough. Or take your chances with buying one quart. As long as you have at least an inch or two of fluid in the bottom of the reservoir after you bleed it you could drive to the autoparts store and get some more fluid.

Heck, I'd get 3 just to be safe. You can always return unopened ones. Use DOT 3, make sure of it. The manual says just to fill to the line on the resevoir so it's a guess 2-3 will do it.

Would you guys use just Ford Dot 3 fluid at the dealership @$4.95 a pint or just go to the parts store and just get a good quality, heavy duty DOT 3 fluid???

Either or, doesn't really matter, it's the DOT number that's imjportant. You have to use DOT 3. $4.95 is not too bad, probably about the same anywhere's else.

I just did a gravity feed on my 2001 F-150 XLT with the rear discs and ABS. It took less than a quart to replace all the old fluid....maybe 2/3 to 3/4 of the quart bottle. I waited until it stopped dripping green OEM fluid and started dripping clear new fluid so I'm sure I got almost all the old stuff out.

Dont forget about the ABS modulator that needs to be cycled to get all the old fluid out. I understand dealers have a device for cycling it. Heaven forbid any air gets in there. rossford
