Please help! I need to rationalize to my wife getting bigger tires!
Looking to upgrade my current 235/70/16's to 285/75/16's
99 F150 4x4 ExtCab
It's not a typical question about "will these fit" but rather... how do I convince my wife that it is worth the price?
My tires are nearly bald, but not bald enough to warrant new tires.
My tires make the truck shake when going between 25 and 40mph because they're out of balance. The tire shop has balanced them for free for me twice, but it didn't help a whole lot, so they said 'well they're just old messed up tires, not necessarily out of balance'
Other than that, it's starting to ice here, and i'd like some AT tires to handle ice/snow/mud (I'm not even going to try to rationalize the mud part)
Any ideas on how I can totally convince her to let me get some new TerraGrapplers?

Tell her its for your safety! lol If that doesn't get her attention then you've got problems! Well at least that always works for the local school board around here, you say the word "safety" and they are just dying to give you money!
tell her you're the man, you pay all the bills, and as long as they continue to be paid, tough **** if she doesn't dig the idea of new tires!
also mention safety, traction, snow, offroad performance, etc.

We're both college students... well not anymore because she just graduated and is now making the big bucks (being a 2nd grade teacher). SOOO technically, she's the one who pays the bills

go to tiredeals4less.com I put the twinto that tire, the Toyo Open Country A/T on my 04, and it just snowed, with icen under it. I am thouroughly impressed to say the least. Not to mention the handling in the mud. Tell her like I told my wife, the tires are important, and i dont feel that putting your life in danger should be a question. Get the tires, you wont regret it!!!
You need tires for your truck and tell her they got a good write up and last longer then the current ones. And after you get them tell her is suggest you get a 6'' fabtech lift to improve the handling even more.

I wouldn't even have told her you wanted bigger tires. I know my wife wouldn't remember what I paid for my last set of tires so I would just go out and buy whatever new ones I want. I just went from 31's to 33's....she knows they are a bigger tire but doesn't really have an idea that they may be more $. Besides, I told her I was getting 33's...conversation done.
Since you're still in college, you need to use up what you got.
You can get new tires when:
A) The state inspection says they don't pass
B) One blows out at high speed (you don't die but, maybe almost)
C) You gadueate, git a job and bring something to the table
p.s.
those 235s you got on there now are the only thing getting you the gas mileage you do get, crappy though it may be.
You want to know pain at the pump?
Put those 285s on there and you'll see what's it like to go to the little woman for gas money more than you do now.
In three months she will be convinced that you got a hoochie-momma shacked up somewhere.

What's she know about trucks, gear ratios, torque etc?
Tell her that the bigger tires have a larger circumference so they cover more ground with each revolution so you'll get better gas mileage. If she buys it, by the time she realizes you're spending more at the pump it'll be to late.
