tire size ???

Im currently running bfg all terrains 285/70/17. im thinking about getting pro comp xtreme all terrains. Will the 305/65/17 fit. If so what will be the difference between those tires and the ones i currently have. i have a 2004 f-150 fx4 with a leveling kit. im completly clueless when it comes to this stuff. Any help would be great. thanks

i guess what i need to know is the difference between the 70 and the 65. i dont even know what the middle number in the tire size is.

i hope this makes a little sense

The middle number in the tire size is the aspect ratio....it is a percentage (i.e. 70 is 70%)...so to figure the size you take the first number, the width of the tire in mm and multiply the aspect ratio (285x.70) to figure the sidewall height....check out the post about Tire Size Calculator and you can see the sizes side by side to see the differences...

a 285/70/17 is basically a 33x11.50 and a 305x65 is basically a 33x12.50.

You will be fine running those on a leveled 4x4 and they should look great!

FX4, you can even fit 305x70x17's which are close to 34's on your truck. I know Maxxis and Goodyear makes this size in a mud tire. But like HawgMan said the 285 or 305x65 would look great also.

No, the first number is the width in mm........so the tires are exactly the same width and the second number is the aspect ratio which is a percentage and 70% is more than 65% of 305.

a 305/65 is basically a 33x12 and a 305/70 is basically a 34x12

No, they are the same width but the 65 is a little shorter.

FWIW, I'm thinking about the same Xtreme AT's myself in the same size for my Expy but I still have OEM wheels so I'm concerned about the width.
