Rear Brakes lock up

Rear brakes sometimes "lock up" or come on (and stay on) heavy, accompanied by ABS light and red brake light. Brakes get really hot, smoke etc, replaced the shoes and drums and cylinders as well as master cylinder, the rear brakes had pretty much burned up. Worked ok for awhile then happened again...could it be something in the abs or emergency brake? Truck does have an electric brake controller for trailering, don't know how that could affect it but....?

Same thing was happening to me, on even a moderately hard stop the rear wheels would lock up? Hot/smoky drums?

For me it turned out the e-brake cable had rusted though from dis-use. Of course I didn't know that and unsuspectingly engaged the brake, pulling the brakes on, and the rusty lines held them on even after the pedal was released. Don't delay in fixing it, the high temps will warp your drums and cause pedal pulse or other problems.

Couldn't be adjusted, the cables had to be replaced. Cost me like $150 at the local Midas. The drums were slightly warped, but they had a brake lathe and re-machined them straight(or round) again.

I think I put that TSB in this thread.

Cables are ~$20ea at Advance, and only take a few minutes to install. Click my signature link & look in the Brakes & Hubs album.
