how wide can i go

would it be ok to put a toyo 38x14.5 r16 on a 16x8 rim or would that create serious problems

I wouldn't do it. It will probably cause the center of the tire's tread to wear quickly.

the thing is i already have some 16x8 and im doing a 6'' suspension and 3'' bl so i thought the 38;s would be best but the smallest width i could find was 14.50 unless i go to a 37'' tire and get a 13.50. would that look alright with that size lift

14.5 is nearly a 370 mm wide tire. Like Wandell said I think that's a bad idea on an 8 inch rim. Even a 13.5 (342 mm) wide tire belongs on a wider rim.

Why not get some 16x10 wheels? They should not be that expensive.
