Going from 17" to 15" or 16" wheels?

I have OEM 17" rims and am just about ready for new tires. The best price I have seen here in town for 285/70/17 BFG A/T's is $225 each. My friend just paid $125 each for 32" BFG A/T's on a 15" rim. Has anybody considered ditching the 17" wheels for smaller just for the sake of saving money on the tires? I seem to have a frequent problem of cracking rims when sliding sideways in the mud and hitting rocks. (I have replaced probably four wheels already). I thought adding smaller wheels might actually give me more rubber in between the terrain and my wheels. Any thoughts?

Thanks
Matt

15's won't fit on your truck.
16's will, that's what came on mine.

16" tires/wheels fit, 15" does not. Check the price on 32 vs 33" tires. Make sure you compare apples to apples. 285/75R16 vs. 285/70R17 cost delta is about $20/ea, both ~33" tires The 32" 265/70R17 is $10 less than the 33" 16" tire.

If you are not stuck on the BFG AT, you can other 33" tires for less money for your 17" rims, like Revos or Destination AT.
