Michelin LTX M/S vs. BFG T/A KO

I think I've narrowed my choice to the tires listed in the thread title. I'd like folks that have run both tires on the same vehicle to give a comparison of the two in the usual areas of quietness, traction, tread life, cupping, etc.

Thanks.

Here's a somewhat related thread...

BTW, I assume you're the same TBZEP from STN? I mostly lurk/occasionally post there. I think I emailed you a couple of years back asking if you were from the Huntingdon area where I grew up.

I can't comment on the BFG, never had them. I had the LTX M/S on my last truck. They were GREAT tires. I put about 40k miles on them when I sold the truck, I believe they could have gone another 40K. I had them rotated & balanced 1 time in 4 years. I put them in light mud and sand and never got stuck. They did well in every type of weather - rain, snow, ice. They made NO noise on the highway.

Have you considered the Michelin LTX A/T? Another great tire.

I need new tires for the bike too.

Yep. I've been spending quite a bit of time on this forum lately, beating my head against the wall trying to decide on some new custom wheels/tires for my 150. And I thought tires for the bike were bad!

Hey,

I have some brand new(2500 Miiles) Michelins for sale that came off my 07 F150. I am in Nashville, TN and travel to Knoxville and Chattanooga quite often so I am sure I could meet you. Here is a link to the ad. http://nashville.craigslist.org/pts/290680759.html. I have dropped the price to $350 also. Email me or give me a ring at 615-300-9650.

Oh, Mine are not the M+S 's though. They still are a nice tire and for $350 for 4 mint condition ones you can't beat that.

While you are at it, help me decide between Pilot Powers, Pirelli Diablos, Bridgestone BT-021's, and Avon Storms.

I'm leaning toward Michelin for both bike and truck.

If I go with Michelin, I think I'll stick with the M/S, but thanks.

I'm not the world's most experienced rider, fer sure, but I put a set of Pilot Powers on my 00 Sprint last year, and have absolutely loved'em. I had a worn pair of BT020/BT057s on the bike that it came with, and it was night and day when I swapped them. I took it to Deal's Gap and they did nothing but inspire confidence. I had them so hot between that big ole' Sprint with my big ole' butt on it that you could smell the rubber reeking when I got off of it a couple of times. I've really liked them. I think some guys complain about the mileage, but I knew I was going to be doing mostly backroads, so I went with them. Havn't done any rain riding, so I can't speak to that, and I can't compare with the others. I know the guys on the Triumph Sprint board like them.

To make this truck tire thread legal, I've been thinking about trying to put a bigger, more aggressive looking wheel and tire on my truck, but I've about convinced myself that since all I usually do is visit my Mom and Dad up in Carroll County occasionally (and sometimes with a bike in tow), and commute, that I might want to be looking at a rear end drop to level the truck and putting some really nice all season tires on it. It's tough to drop the poseur act though

I've only had the LTX M/S on my truck, got it used with them on it at 51K miles. Tires were put on at 31K miles and have a total of 51K miles on them (truck has only 82k miles) and about 1/3 of the tread left so if i can get another 15k miles on them i'd be pretty happy. So far they've performed great in all conditions (2wd truck doesn't see extreme off road or snow deeper than 8-12") and super quiet virtually no road noise

Well I have owned both tires. The LTX M/S were on my '99 Expy 4WD and the BFG's are currently on my '05 F150 5.4V 2WD.

I will note that I've had the BFG's for approx 6 months. No snow, but other than normal commutes in dry or wet (yes, it does rain occasionally in San Diego) conditions so far I am impressed with the traction, road feel. Time will tell however.

The LTX M/S were nothing short of outstanding. I put over 50k+ miles on them in over 7 years, driven on ice, snow, rain, dry and wet conditions. The tires just do not want to "wear out". Also, the LTX's are by far the most quietest tires I have owned. Easily, I could have put another 25K-30K additional miles. I'm not kidding. These tires are great and I highly recommend them. I am pretty **** as to maintaining rotation, balancing and proper tire pressure.

The only issue (at least for me) was that the LTX's were expensive. But for replacing tires at every 50K-60K+ intervals, I like to think that this is a very fair (ROI) return on investment.

Not quite the answer to your OP as both tire brands were mounted on 2 different vehicles, but just passing on my favorable experiences on the LTX's and the BFG's (thus far). GL.

I know you didn't originally mention this tire, but I put the Bridgestone Revos on my truck and I love them. They have an aggressive look to them but are quiet and comfortable. I read a ton of reviews on them and I would say 95% of them had great things to say.

I talked to my tire guy today. He suggested I go with the Michelin LTX M/S over the BF G A/T KO. He said that they are both excellent tires, but the more agressive treaded BFG's will cup worse than the Michelins as they get older and will make more noise. Since the bulk of my driving is on-road, and I've never even been close to getting stuck off-road with the OEM tires, I'd rather go with the milder tread profile and hopefully save what's left of my hearing.

If I don't have a catastrophic failure, I have a feeling the Michelins might be the last I have to buy for the truck. I've only put 40,000 miles on it since 2000, and the Goodyear treads looked to have another 20,000 left in them if the belts hadn't let go. I figure I'll get a minimum of 60,000 out of the Michelins, and maybe even 80,000 so that should put me into the year 2018-2021 if I keep driving the same amount per year. I figure I won't be able to afford gas for it way before then.
