I have 18" FX4 wheels on my 05 2WD crew with a daystar 2.5 in the front. What size can max out at running this OEM wheel.

if i get the Pro comp 7089 17x9 with 4.75 of bkspc......what size can I max out at?

 

I'm sure you could fit a 33x12.50-18 or maybe the new 305/65-18 BFG's (34x12.50) using the OEM wheels. If you go to a 17x9 wheel with 4.75 inches of backspacing, I doubt you could fit a 33x12.50. If you could find a 9 inch wide wheel with 5.5 inches of backspacing, you could probably still fit the 33x12.50's. Of course, this is just specualtion. I've seen several 4x2's with leveling kits running 33's on the OEM wheels, but a wider aftermarket wheel with less backspacing changes everything.

 

what about 285/70/17 on a set of 17x9 with 4.75 backspace. Thinking that the smaller tire might give me some breathing room.....

 

I think you need a wheel with more backspacing, like 5.5 to 6 inches.

 

ok then why do most of the wheels out there have less than 5" of backspacing for our bolt pattern. Are they for lifted trucks only?? I guess I am just a little confused on what application these wheels will work for then.

 

That's a great question and I wish I knew the answer. I don't know why most of the off road style aftermarket wheels for the 04-07's don't have enough backspacing. Especially when the manufacturers do a great job with the large, street style wheels.

 

So then what wheels are out there with this backspacing and lug pattern in a 17x9?

I'm in the same boat as "wthrower"; 05, 2wd, 2" in front, 1 1/2" aal in the rear, I'm currently running 285/70/17 on the stock wheels. I'll be adding the Xenon fender flares and wouldn't mind if the wheels/tires stick out more than stock but I haven't been able to find any with a 5.5 - 6" backspacing?

Also what's the difference between backspacing and offset?

 

What I found after a year of searching was that by staying narrower than a 13" wide tire on a 9.5" rim with at least 5.5" backspace you can fit 34" - 35" tall tires without any rubbing. I ended up going with a 285/65/20 (34.5"x11.5") and have no rubbing issues. As for rims, choices are pretty limited, I found that almost all of American Racing and MB Motoring rims have at least 5.5" backspace while some of the Eagles and Boss have 6" of backspace. It all depends on if you want the tire hanging outside the fenderwells or how wide of a tire you think you need. Good luck with your search.

 

After speaking with MANY different shops here in OC, CA.....I have discovered that the Pro Comp wheel with 4.75 inches of backspace will be just fine. Either with a lift or without.

With the 6" lift: it will be very nice looking. Each wheel will be sticking out about 1.5" more than normal. Now it just depends on how wide of a tire you run that will determine rubbing. 35x12.50x17....youre golden. Any wider and you might rub...but its up to you how much you can tolerate.

Without the lift: It again will add 1.5" to the tires sticking out. I have decided to run 285/70/17 on my 05 2WD with a 2.5" lift in the front. This will give me an agressive look until i get the 6" pro comp put on.

I was told a company like Pro Comp wouldnt steer us in the wrong direction with insufficient backspacing. At least thats what the consensus is around here in the local shops and of course 4 Wheel Parts ( who owns them ).....

 

Ok, your OEM wheels are 7.5 inches wide with 5.5 inches of backspacing. So, a 9 inch wide wheel with 4.75 inches of backspacing is gonna stick out about 2 1/4 inches farther than the OEM wheels.

One more thing, if I'm currently running my desired tires on the stock 17" wheels without any rubbing; Would it be correct to assume that for new wheels, I just need to pick the offset & width that I want according to how far I want them to stick out?

Right. Also be sure to keep in mind how much clearance you have. You don't want to create rubbing problems.

 

Ok, so I did some research and I've picked out a set of American Racing wheels: 17x8, 6x135, +25mm offset, and 5.5" backspacing. I should be golden, right?
