I was wondering if someone with 285/70r17 bfgoodrich at/ko's on factory 7.5 rims could measure the tread width for me. Just curious how wide it is on the factory rim. I am planning on putting these on in the spring just wanting to know how wide the tread pattern is on the factory rim of an 05

 

The thread width will not change regardless of the wheel. Do you mean the sidewall to sidewall measurement?

 

no I am looking for the tread width itself I know from side wall to side wall is 11.25, I am trying to figure out how wide the tread is.

 

The thread width is 285mm.

 

the reason why i ask is I am running the factory 255/65r17 right now and the tread pattern is only 8 inches wide, if you use the 255 it converts to 9.96 inches. thats why i am trying to figure how wide the tread is on the 285/70r17

 

BFG's website might give you the width in inches.

 

it only gives the overall width on a 8.5 inch rim

 

Doesn't matter what wheel it is on. The tread width will be 285mm or about 11.25" (285/25.4).

I see that you have the bfgoodrich on factory 17" could you please measure the width of the tread, just the tread not from side wall to side wall just the tread..PLEASE

 

285mm is the section width, not the tread width. Tirerack nor BFG web sites list tread width. I'll measure mine tonight, 285/70R17 on OEM 7.5" wide rims. Different year truck, but a 7.5" rim is 7.5" wide.

Go to www.tirerack.com and look up some tires manufactured by Firestone/Bridgestone. They list tread width as well as sectional width. You can get a pretty close idea of what your BFG tires will measure.

By the way I just replaced some LT275/70-17 Revo's with P275/70-17 Alenza's (Both Bridgestone tires) and the Revos measured 8.2" tread width while the Alenza has a 7.7" tread width. Both share a 10.5 sectional width(the fattest part of the sidewall).

8.2" vs. 7.7" tread width is probably near the extremes on both ends as far a 265/70-17. Most probably fall somewhere between those two widths. My point is all tires of the same size are not actually exactly the same.

A 285/70/17 will be APPROXIMATELY 8.4" in tread width.

 

I dont know about that my 255/65r17 tread measures 8.2"

 

In the P-Metric sizing system, the first number is the width of the tires thread in millimeters. A 285/70-17 has a tread that is 285mm wide, a 305/70-17 has a tread 305mm wide and so on. The width of the tread is never going to change regardless of the size of the rim. Now, the width from sidewall to sidewall will be wider on a tire mounted on a 10 inch wide wheel vs. the same tire mounted on a 7 inch wide wheel because of sidewall buldge.

 

Correct. Sorry wandell but you are wrong on this, This is one of the most common missconceptions about tire sizing. APT is correct. its how wide the tire is from wall to wall on the outermost part of the bulge. Only way to figure out the tread with, besides measureing would be if its a 70 series tire, that means 70% of the tire is side wall. So if you know the sidewall height you can go from there.
