New wheels and tires....

Hi all,

I have an 03' F-150 FX4 Super Crew, currently have the stock 17's and tires on it. I'm looking at putting new wheels and tires on it now. What I'm wondering is does anyone have BFG A/T KO's at 285/70 R17, and if so how do they look and handle? I'm also putting ARE Series 1082 17 x 8 wheels on it. I considered going a bit bigger on the tires, maybe a 315/70 R17, but I've been told by the tire guys that it may rub a bit without a lift (which I don't want if I can avoid it). Does anyone know if that's acurate? I know the 315's are a full 2 inches wider and close to 3 inches taller, but I'm not sure about all that backspacing stuff on the wheels. The 1082's have a 4 1/2 backside, is that going to make my wheels stick out pretty far from the wheel wells?

Sorry lots of questions, and sorry if all this stuff has been asked before, but there so much info on this forum its tough to sort through it all haha.

4.5 inches of backspacing is what you need. That is what your factory 17x7.5 inch wheels have. The new 17x8's will only stick out 1/2 inch farther than your OEM wheels. Also, I don't think the 315/70-17's will fit using those wheels without a lift. All of the 4x4's I've seen running 315/70-17's used the OEM wheels and they had minor rubbing. Also, the 315's are only about an inch wider and 2 inches taller than the 285/70-17's.

Right, sorry meant 2 inches wider and 3 inches taller than the stocks.

I'll probably just go with the 285 option, but didn't know if they would look that much different from the stock tires. Tough to spend that kind of dough without a good appearance change, if you know what I mean.

How much different are the 285's on 17's than the 285's you have on your 16's, because your truck looks about the same as I want mine to look, cept mines black haha. Heck I may even go with a 3" body lift after seeing your's it looks great!

I know exactly what you mean. Personally, I'd go with a 10 inch wide wheel and a 33x12.50 tire.

Well then I'd have to go to a half size wheel though, and then be limited later on.

I considered getting a wider wheel, but the 285's don't fit on a 10, and if I wanted to get 315's (which are 34.5 in) later on, the 10 in wide wheel is the top of the fit anyway.

285's would fit on a 10'' wide rim. my truck has 285's and stock rims, take a look and see what you think about that size. Also, consider a 305/70/17 which is basically a 34x12.

a 285/75/16 and 285/70/17 are the exact same size just different rim size.

I guess the only problem is the rim I want (and is the right price for me) only comes in a 17x8. I'll probably look around some more, see if I can't find something similar from another company.

I have 295 BFG's and I love them. Agressive look but no road noise. Excellent tire

Ok well I thought sure I'd go with the BFG ATKO 285/70/17 until I got over the tire shop (incidentally I was able to find a local place that was cheaper than anything I could find online, mounted, balanced, and aligned). I started eyeballing the 315's and the guy said we could throw a couple of them on my stock rims and see if they rub at all before putting them on my new wheels next Weds when they come in. So we're going to give that a go on Mon., and if they don't rub I'm going to put the 315/70/17 on. Keeping my finger's crossed, because I'd really like to put a 4" lift on it down the road and I think the bigger meats may look a little better. I'm still bummed that the wheel I want doesn't come in a wider size, but I'll compromise that, at least it fits the tire.

Best of luck. Let us know how they fit. 315/70-17's are a tight fit with the OEM wheels, so it's gonna be really close. You will probably have to trim your front bumper's lower plastic valance for clearance.
