Unhappy Brake job experience

Holy cow. I just wanted to share my experience with the group.

It turns out that at 26k miles, my left front brake pads were completely gone and had taken the rotor with it. The right side was almost gone too, but still had a little bit of life left in them. Anyway, I purchased new Raybestos PG+ rotors and EBC 6000 Greenstuff pads. I originally wanted Raybestos Quiet Stop pads, but they were out.

It took me an entire day to do the job. Yes, I was bitten by the rotor/hub flange seizure problem. So, I sprayed the lug bolt and backside gaps with PB Blaster profusely and beat the hell out of the rotors with an 8-lb sledge for hours. WTF!? They finally broke loose and the new ones went on with a liberal application of anti-seize.

The brakes have never been better, not even when new. These pads are great, although it’s a little too early to say anything about dust build-up yet. If anyone’s had experience with these pads, I’d like to hear about it.

I wish I had the skills to do my own brakes. Sounds like you got some good pads.

I just took my truck to get my brakes done. Ford wanted 210 an axle and Meineke had a specail for 130 an axle with a fluid flush. The pads are lifetime but I wish I could get better pads put on them.

Skills? Any monkey can do brakes. Now, banging on rotors with a hammer, that takes skill!

Safety for the monkeys

Well, not any monkey can do brakes. Having your truck stop piror to slamming into something is not a whimsical thing. We're not talking about a stereo or seat cover. Your monkey's brakes keep my wife and kids from possible harm. If you're not 100% confident of your ability to correctly replace your brakes, please allow a professional to help you. I once drove a forklift into bulilding (actually going pretty slowly) and there's nothing sicker that having that pedal fall to the floor as you 'just keep going'

I would have never tought about changing my own brakes...until my nutjob friend who doesn't like to pay mechanics told me he wanted help changing his. We even flushed his fluid...

it was not bad at all. So then I went and changed all 4 pads on my own F150, np at all. Haven't changed rotors, but I can't imagine it being too bad (unless you have an abnormal issue).

the key is finding a good how-to online and reading up before getting the tools out.

TNoff's comment about "Lifetime Pads" made me laugh, it is such a stupid marketing ploy that these cheap resellers use. Who can say how long a "Lifetime" is? It's only as long as the pads last, that's all. When the pads wear out, you return them and you get another set of those clay pads, that again turn to dust in no time! It is MUCH better to buy good brake pads that give good performance and last a long time.
I prefer the "Carbon Metallic Pads", Very long life, Excellent Performance, Low Dust, and they make the rotors last longer.

I agree, and I have had great luck with Wagner Thermo Quiet.
