Question What size tire is correct?

I need to replace the tires on a '97 V6, 4x2 Flareside... it currently has LT245/75R16. The door post sticker specifies P235/70R16SL. The owner's manual has a warning statement, saying the tire size should NOT be increased. This vehicle is just used for commuting, ordinary driving... no off-road; only very light hauling. What would you astute gentlemen recommend for best fuel economy, ride, and handling? Keep the LT245/75 size or go back to the P235/70 original equipment size? What are the cost considerations between these sizes? My intent is to do only what is necessary to make this truck attractive to a potential buyer...

Thanks for your help...

Paul

I'd stay with the 245's if you are happy with the look and performance.

The stock size would probably be cheaper and should increase fuel economy slightly.

I'd stick with the Lt245's. They're stronger (better durability, wear and capacity), more common size and you have a much larger variety in replacement tires. The 235/70's are way too small...Even for a 4X2. There is nothing unsafe about it.

Question speedometer compensation?

Thanks guys... do I need to change the speed sensor gear to get the correct reading of speed with the 245/75 tires? I did a comparison run on Discount Tire's site, comparing the 235/70 to the 245/75. It says that, with the 245/75 tires, when the speedometer is registering 65mph the actual vehicle speed is about 69mph. That 4mph might not seem like much but around my area it could mean the difference between a $200 fine & no ticket at all.

Is there a different gear available?

Thanks... Paul

Yes, on the 97-98's you just change a gear. They are available from Ford.

Which gear?

Hi. Thanks to all for your replies. What gear would need replacing to adjust the speedometer reading? Is it the speed sensor at the back of the transmission? Or is it the ring/pinion in the rearend? If the latter, it will not get done by me!!

Thanks...Paul
