Help changing from stock tires

I just bought a 2000 F150 supercrew and it has nasty 225-75-16 kuhmo tires.
Two have sidewall splits and the others are showing signs of cracking.

The too-small tires make it look like a kids toy!

What size tires can I fit without a lift that fill out the wells?

If I have to go up to 17" wheels then not a problem tho (obviously) I would rather buy bigger/better 16" tires if that works.

I bought the truck to use both on and off road (travelling to oilfields in the western US) so I need something that wears good but also performs offroad when I need them to.

They also need to NOT look like the POS ones I have right now.

Any help would be MOST appreciated!!

If the truck is a 4x2, I'd suggest a 265/75-16. If the truck is a 4x4, I would go with a 285/75-16. It sounds like you need an aggressive all terrian tire like the BFG AT KO, Nitto Terra Grappler or Toyo Open Country AT.
