Hi I have a ? for anyone who can answer. I recently bought a used 97 f150 supercab v6 xlt 95000 miles. It began to shake while driving at about 60mph for a couple weeks and I haven't noticed it since felt like in the back. It also shakes a little while stopping. I hada blow out and was told while gettting new tire that I needed new front brakes. Had my brakes inspected and was told new pads, rotors fine, pack the bearings and that I need new front calipers on front. I have not felt anything stick and I have asked a few shade tree buddys who think the calipers are not on the up and up. for everything they wanted to charge 400.00. they also said I had some play in rear axle due to a loose rod and clamps in my transaxle and could not quote me a price as they didn't do that type of work. does anybody think they are on the up and up on this? is this a common problem?
Well for beginners. All the work they mention is easily done with a minimal amount of tools and vehicular knowledge. There is no way I would pay $400.00+ for new front calipers, pads and a bearing repack. All this could be done for less than $200.00 and a few hours labor, with beverage breaks included. If you can, replace both front calipers at the same time, as they provide 85% of your stopping power.
Sounds like I have a few people who can help me do that. I looked at the work order and it says replace bearings and nothing about calipers (and I know they said calipers) does this change things or are they just confused, wrong, or should I find another shop?
Transaxle = tranny in the rear, combines with the rear axle. Usually found on sports cars for handling balance. Vette's and Lamborghinis are just two or many cars that have transaxles. (FWD cars also have transaxles, located up front)
Our trucks have the tranny in the front, then a separate rear axle.

My wife always wines when I ask her to take the car to the shop.I let the inspection go too late and asked her to take it in.She was off work but I still had to convince her that they would not rip her off. Finally she agreed and took it in. She came back and agreed that it wasn't as bad as she thought it would be. Everything was fine on the truck, it just needed a pint of turn signal fluid.
