Brake fluid shelf life??

Brake fluid shelf life??

I have some Valvoline Dot 3 &4 synthetic brake fluid that I've had sitting in my garage for 3 or 4 years. It's still sealed, but is it safe to use after sitting so long? I thought I'd ask before I use it.

As long as it's still clear it will be fine.

Rule of thumb is once the seal is broken, don't store it for later use. That's what I've been told, anyway. As long as it's sealed, it should still be good.,,,,98

As little as 3% moisture can decrease fluid's performance by 30% and also negate its anti-corrosives. Additionally, standard DOT 3 brake fluid can only absorb up to 7% moisture, after which water droplets and braking problems begin to form. Anti-lock brake systems (ABS) are especially affected by moisture because they can cycle as many as 20 times per second. Spongy pedal feel is a sign of moisture in the brake fluid...Depending on temperature fluctuations and humidity, a brake system can take on as much as 3% water in as little as eight months. It's usually recommended that the fluid be entirely flushed at least every two years or 24,000 miles."

A shelf life of 2 years for unsealed bottles is commonly recommended. It's cheap, throw it out.

If seal is not broken, should be ok, if so, I would run down to the auto store and get me a new can, not expensive at all....

if seal not broken it will be ok,whos to say the stores brake fluid isnt sitting around for that long or do we assume that it is just made and ready for you M.W.
