Question "Knocking" when you depress the brake pedal

Hey,
I'm trying to help my dad out w/ his truck. It's a 95 F150, 4x4/5.0. When you depress the brake pedal we start hearing a "knocking" sound. If you depress it completely it will stop, but if you stop mid way it'll just keep "knocking"? Anyone have any idea before I put it on jacks and start looking around?

I had a similiar problem while on a fishing trip. One of the caliper bolts had came loose and fell out. when i applied the brake the caliper would knock into my rim. I would check the caliper mounting bracket bolts.

hope this helps
