285/70R17 on Stock 17" x 7" Wheels

I have a stock 2001 Supercrew 4x4 with the stock 17" x 7" wheels and currently have the stock tires(265/70R17) on it. Has anyone put 285/70/R17 tires on their stock 17" x 7" wheels or does anyone know if this will work? BFG's website says they recommend 7.5" wheels or bigger.

Thanks

Welcome to the site! Several people have mounted 285/70-17's on their stock wheels. Also, the OEM Ford 17 inch wheels are 7.5 inches wide. The OEM 16 inch wheels are 7 inches wide.

That looks awesome I think I will go with the BFG's. I've been toying with the idea of cranking on the torsion bars. what exactly is involved in doing that.

It's simple. Crawl under your truck about where the front seats are and you'll see the torsion bars. Follow them all the way back and you'll see the eccentric and the adjusting bolt....just tighten the bolt up to put more twist on the bars. It's a little easier if you jack the front wheels up off the ground, but you don't have to.

I cranked mine up just enough to level the truck.

Jag,

Nice looking tuck, can you please post some additional pics of it. I'd like to see how the larger tires look from the side. Also some pics of the front and back to see how thick they look

Thanks in advance

Gerry, and Gang, I had the same issue, was running the stock 17's and wanted a fatter look, Wandell and other members gave me some great advice. I went to a 16x8 rim and 305 70 16 Bridgestone Duellers, and i love it.

Here is link for a few pics.

With the stock 17x7.5 wheels you can run 285's.

With the stock 16x7 wheels, NO tire manufacturer recommends mounting 285's on 7" rims. Many guys have with no problems. If there were any tire problems there would be no warranty. And if someone were hurt, there could be liability issues.

You're close, but you're clicking on the wrong button...
You are clicking on the 'http://' button, which inserts a hyperlink
You should be clicking on the IMG button and paste the address into the popup block.
or you could type: IMG]address in here[/IMG] with a '[' in front on the first IMG (it wants to post an invalid picture if a put the [ in)
