BFG AT's....265's or 285's

LT265 70R17's or LT285 70R17's? BFG AT's. What is the difference between the two? Planning to put some on a 2004 F150 XL 4x4 with a daystar 2.5 inch lift in the front.

A 265/70-17 is basically a 32x11.50-17 and a 285/70-17 is essentially a 33x11.50-17. Personally, I'd go with the 285's.

That's kind of what I thought.....I figured they were a bit taller, but I was worried about the width.....I didn't want a really wide tire. Would both of these tires' widths be the same if they were mounted on a 17" rim?

I'm sorry. I just noticed my typo. A 265/70-17 is a 32x10.50. The first number is the width of the tire in millimeters. 265mm wide vs. 285mm wide.

So basically the 285's are about 20 mm wider than the 265's....which is about the equivalent of an inch and a quarter or so. I think they have a better load rating too. Thanks

20mm ~ 0.8"

Divide by 25.4 mm per inch.

I have a 97 Supercab Flareside Lariat, and I recommend the 285s.
They fill up the wheelwell good, and they perform well.

I've just recently purchased a set of 285/70/17 BFG tires and put them on the mickey thompson classic II. which is 17x9. I filled up the wells and blew them out on the side as well. definetly go with the 285s, the only drawback to these tire is the Price, mine were 185 a tire.

If you want the BFG AT KO, go for 285/70R17. I have them on my 03 and love how they look.

Question

APT & Pickup Man:
Did you notice a reduction in performance or mileage going from a 265-17 to a 285-17?

I have no exact comparison because the stock tires didn't make it through the first tank of gas. Based on my prior F-150 experience, I think these tires are negatively affecting performance and fuel economy. I won't be buying these tires again. I drive aggressively. Some may not notice the differences.

Hey F150Flare,

I'm considering the same tire & wheel combo as you. Do you have any pics I can look at before investing so much money.

Greeny...

APT, so are you saying that you would not buy the BFGoodrich again in the 285/70/17 size???

I won't buy the BFG AT KO in 285/70R17 again for this truck. I'll go back to 265/70 and probably Revos again. I'm sure most people wouldn't notice the effects on performance, though. Keep in mind, I do drive aggressively.
