255/70/16 to 265/75/16

I'm looking to put on some 265/75/16 Bidgestone Dueler HL's, up from the stock Goodyear RTS's of 255/70/16.

I know the speedometer will be off, but my main concern is performance and/or damage to the tranny. I don't want to mess with th rear end either, but would like a nicer looking tire on the truck. seems the 255/70/16 was a bit small for a 4x4 xlt Screw

I did that same swap on my Expy a while back, before I got new wheels/tires.

They were BFG All-Terrains...

At any rate, I wouldn't worry about it. The difference is pretty minor, and your speedo won't be off all that much. You likely won't even notice the small drop in power due to the change in the overall gearing.

I swapped my 255/70-16's for 285/75-16's as soon as I purchased my truck. My speedometer is off approximately 5mph, but that was the only difference I noticed.

According to the tire size calculator on this web site:

http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html

There will be a 5.3% decress in your speedo reading compared to your actual speed.

as in Speedo says 60mph actual speed is 63.2

I'm not much concerned about milage being off, all those years with the FJ40 and CJ7 with larger tires, its easy to look at the odometer and add 5 or 10% to it, I just want to make sure with all these computer based systems/vehicles, that I'm not going to hurt the tranny....

I noticed that my trans shifted differently too. It would rev higher before shifting. Probably because the VSS was reporting a slower speed then actual speed??

Once I swapped out the VSS to one with one tooth less then the stock one, all was well again and my speedo/odo is now pretty darn close to actual speed and miles.

If you have a 97-98, it's a simple 5 minute swap (once you have the correct gear). If you have a 99 and above, it'll require a computer reprogram to recal the speedo......

Good luck!

Mitch

can't swap, need to reprogram, need to find someone close w/ a tuner....Don't see the need to purchase one.

instead of the H/L's you should go with the APT III's. much more aggressive looking tire compared to the H/L, plus the price is virtually cheaper and would complement the look of your Screw. try lookin for them at your nearest sears auto.
