Planning ahead

Recently got 04 F150.

At first I was just looking to modify the truck with bigger wheels and tires for an overall better look. After some research, I believe I can get 18x8s with BFG 285/65/R17s on it.

Now, as I get more into the truck and the fun of having it, I am looking to get my feet wet with offroading (no pun intended).

Accordingly, I was thinking about a lift. Nothing crazy, maybe 3". With that in mind I am wondering if my planned wheel/tire purchase would not be right (too small) with the lift.

In summary, I guess my questions are:

For moderate off-roading (something a novice to intermediate would do) are just the tires enough or should I look for the lift?

If a lift is done, is 3" enough?

Are the tires I could put on now going to be inadequate with the 3" lift?

Any insight is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
