Tires Bouncing

I have 99 F150 extended cab, Goodyear Wrangler 265/70 R17 tires. Tires hop/bounce at 40mph, even worse when brakes are applied. Any ideas?

When do they hop/bounce? When they slip? when driving down the highway?

My first thought is that the shocks are worn, especially on a 99.

I neglected to see that the bouncing was at one speed only on my original post. I agree, look at tire out of balance first.

How long has it been bouncing?

Are they new tires?

Could it be warped front rotors?

Try jacking up the rear end, putting it gear, and watch the tires from the side and the back. Do they look like they wobble either horizontally or vertically?

I had the same problem. Once I would get up to 40 MPH, the truck would bounce (usually seemed to come from the rear end, and sometimes it wasn't bad, sometimes it was very noticeable).

They probably need to be balanced. The tires I had were out of tread anyway, so I had them replaced before I had them balanced. Haven't had the problem since.

Thanks for the advice, I already the tires balanced and a brake job several months ago but it didn't help. I was thinking maybe one was out of round, I still have good tread left but not enough to true tires. If it gets much worse I may purchase new tires.

Seriously, new shocks are cheaper than new tires and your 99 needs them if they are still OEM.

Front shocks are less than a year old but they were cheap. I will try shocks first. Do you have recomendations?

Over in the Super Crew forum.....a few guys were raving about the Rancho RS9000's.

There is also a thread there on installation tips.
