Question How do you like your BFG AT's and MT's??

Those of you with the infamous BFG AT's and BFG MT's...i have a few questions for you,if you dont mind.

Which do you have, what size and how do you like them?

How do they perform in the rain..do they hydroplane?

How would you rate the cornering grip?

How loud/annoying is the road noise or 'hum'?

If you had to do it all over again..what would you choose?

BFG's are very popular among our members and i thought a detailed personal rating would be beneficial to those of us yet to buy.

Thanks everyone,
DS

I have BFG AT 265/75R16's, and they're great. I would definitely buy them again. They fit perfectly on a 4x4 and look really good. Hydroplaning has been unnoticable so far, and handling is good. As far as road noise, it is noticeable, but barely. I only hear it around 30-50 mph, and it's minimal. Go with the AT's, I think the MT's would be a bit noisy.

I put the 285/75-16 BFG AT and also love them. Can not believe the difference in the rain. Also had a chance to try them out in the snow and they were great. Now if I can only find someone to buy those Goodyears that I took off.

Cool

Yeah, they are great. I have the 265/75/16 AT'S, and they are quiet and great in the rain. I plan on gettin a set of 285 BFG's for my next set.

Thumbs up

I'm running 33/12.50/15 MT's on my truck. When new, they were only slightly louder than the AT's, but they're almost worn out, and are beginning to get louder. Wet traction is excellent. I've owned several sets of BFG ATs and MTs and loved them all.

Talking

thanks for the input so far guys. Im looking real hard at the AT-ko's but i love the look of the the MT's so much.

Rockcrawl,

You say they were only slightly louder than AT's,so i take it you've had both. Great wet traction would not have been what i would have expected from the MT's..thats surprising. Well hopefully ill get some more input on both styles. Id love to get MT's but im real skeptical about onroad performance.

Thanks
DS

had the at's on my last 2 trucks. this time i'm thinking of going with the mt's. better look imo.
i read an article in 4wheel and offroad that tested the 2. according to the article the only real traction difference was in the snow and that was minimal.

On my 99 F150, I installed the BFG MT 285/70 R17 at 93k. Now, at 148k, they are ready to be replaced. That amounts to 55k life while being run at 50 PSI.

These tires are excellent. They complement the look of the truck, they have superior snow and mud traction and, if rotated often, have a tolerable noise level. Hydroplaning has not been an issue until the tread reached 3/32nd's. The tires cornered decently well on banked turns taken at a higher than average rate of speed. In emergency stopping, the MT's grip so well that the ABS rarely activates in dry pavement conditions. The tire noise is tolerable but they are not quiet.

In hindsight, the tires added tremendously to the appearance of my particular truck. They did decrease the gas mileage by 2 MPG and they did increase interior ride noise. The durability of the sidewall and resistance to puncture for the entire tire are also worth noting. There have been a handful of situations in deep snow that these tires have saved me from calling a tow truck. Deep snow ability, tread life (at 50PSI), appearance and durability earn this tire a very high recommendation.

I have 285/70R17 AT KO's. I don't care for them, from new to 40k miles I have now. I nthe rain, they do not hydroplane, but there just isn't as much grip as I expect, probably due to the lack of sipes. On snow, the hard compound and lack of sipe also hurts. I notice in both acceleration, braking and turning either the slip or ABS activations.

My references are OEM Goodyear Wrangler ATS on my 99 F-150 for 50k miles and the Bridgestone Dueler AT Revo I replaced them with. The ATS is better than the BFG for the first 40k miles, then equal. The Revos were better than both, but I only had them for 20k miles before I got my 03 F-150.

At least they look great, probably the best looking AT tire around. That just doesn't cut it for me.

I have the 285/65/18 AT's and I absolutely hate them. I drive gravel alot and that is chewing them up. I also found as soon as I put them on the truck the ride was terrible. It rides too rough for my liking. Maybe it is because they are a 10 ply(i think they are.) I can honestly say that it rides like a truck now!! I will admit that they are light years better than the crap factory ones they put on. I think the next set of tires will be back to the factory size spec.

well, I dont have the BFG on my screw but I do have them on my 2002 Ranger Edge 4x4. I have 30x9.50x15 BFG AT's and they are ok. They do great on the road with minimal noise, but on gravel roads they do get chewed up fairly quickly. Stay out of the mud with them. They are horriable in mud.

Around here there is alot of clay and river silt, and they do nothng but slip and slide. If you are going with the BFG, get the MT. Also, something else to consider, on my 2000 ext cab F150 4x4 I ran a 265/75/16 Maxxis Buckshot Mudder and I got 45,000 miles out of them and still had another 25%-30% tread left on the tire when I traded the truck. Those tires did great in all conditions, from rock, to mud, to gravel, and on the road. Good luck with your tire decision.

There is such a market out there for tires that there are so many decisions to make. Each tire has its pros/cons and the biggest decision is do you want to sacrafice road noise for performance off road, or if it is a street truck, would you rather sacrafice a little handling and get the road noise.
