I saw a demo in a local dealer's showroom (Stirling Ford) about two years ago when I had my '98. It was a 4X4 SuperCab, and it had 305-70s on stock rims. Sidewalls looked pretty compressed and bent in, but the truck sure looked tough.

My third F-series ordered new. The other two: '73 F-100 Custom, 240 cube 6, 3 on the tree, tan, "West Coast" mirrors, step bumper, knitted vinyl seat, AM radio; and '98 F-150 SC short-box XL, XLS package, Pacific Green, 4.2 5-speed, 3.55 LS, FM-cassette.

GREAT trucks!

Yes a 305/70/16 should fit on the stock rim, but you will have some sidewall bulge and will need to crank up the torsion bars. For comparison's a 305/70/16 is 32.8 tall and 12 inches wide as where a 285/75/16 is 32.8 tall and only 11.2 wide. Now if you look at some of the posts on here or ask around you will see that a lot of the people in here have 285's. The 285 is just slightly skinner which will make for less sidewall bulge. I don't think .8 inches is going to make that much of a difference, IMO.

I've seen a few trucks with 305 GY AT/S on the same rims that KYFordFreak has - they do look neat, but the middle channel of tread, for those who know the tire - was noticeably worn.

If I had the 16" rims, I'd be putting on 285 MT's. 305's look nice for a while, but the 285 looks good and fits good.

Check the tire manufacturer's recommendation for the specific tire. Going beyone those recommendations creates safety problems and may void the tire warranty.

All tires have a "range" of rim widths that is allowable, with a specific width which is preferable. That said, the preferable width is the one to use. If you run them on either side of this, you will not get the optimal distance for tread wear. Especially if you run rims on the narrow side of 'prefered'.

If you choose a tire and run it on a .5" narrower than its 'prefered' size, you can away with it - barely.

As Bambino points out "305 GY AT/S ... they do look neat, but the middle channel of tread, for those who know the tire - was noticeably worn."

My sotck rims are only 7" wide. So I'll not go beyond 265/75 unless I buy new rims. That's my .5" 'beyond prefered'.

I am not sure if your truck came stock with 255/70/16's ( check the door sticker) but this is what I based my results on. The diff between 285/70/16 and 285/75/16 is that the 70 series will have a sidewall of about 7.85 inches, diameter of 31.71 and the 75 series will have sidewall of about 8.42, diameter of 32.8, both are about the same width ( 305/70/16's have the same width and diameter of the 285/75 but are 12 inches wide). Point being that your best bet is to go with no bigger than a 285/75, you will get a little more clearance and it will fill up the fender and another plus is that you can find more 285/75's. Your speedometer will be off by 8.45%, rear axle would be like going to a 3.25 rear axle and rpm ( based at 2200 rpm) would drop to 2014.
I get all my info from this tire calculator, just click compare tire A to tire B.

I Have 285's on my truck, and will be switching to 305 Pro Comps soon. The 285's are just to skinny for a lifted 4x4.

Mudder
Love the truck. If you have a 4in lift why not go bigger than 305/70's, I'd say get at least a 315/75's. Just my .02 cents, It's your truck I wouldn't want people to tell me what to do either.
