Question Big rims and ride quality?

I've heard, more than once, that big rims (18"+) don't ride very well. I guess it makes sense that less rubber between you and the road would mean a stiffer ride. Anyone with large wheels notice a significant amount of change in ride quality after making the switch? I'm thinking of getting some new rims but would like some opinions about riding on 18"- 22" wheels before I make my decision. It's alot of scratch to put down on something that may annoy me in the long run!

Ride Quality?

I put 20' rims with 45 series tires on my F150 and didn't notice much difference in ride quality. I later dropped the truck with a 3/4" Belltech drop kit which did impact the ride quality significantly. Since it's lower you feel the bumps alot more, but its also more stable in turns and on the freeway it feels good too. I like the truck like that and dont really mind the bumps, I just go a little easier. Depends on what your priorites are. Expect some change but not that drastic from just the rims & tires unless you go to like a 30 series tire which is hardly no tire and all rim. Hope this helps, JR

im no expert

I have never dealt with large rims but i would have to imagine that just with large tires 38"-46" on relatively small rims causes the truck to bounce all over the road, that small amounts of tire on Large rims would cause the opposite - Stiff ride. Also i have heard that with the low profile tires there isnt as much rubber to help absorb bumps in the road and if you drive too fast over a pothole or something big enough that you run the risk of either blowing your tires of damaging your rims. Like i said im no expert. I hope you find something you like.

You should read what Consumer Reports says about the Tires and Rims. They even track tested different set ups. Its in the Jan 04 issue on page 50 and 51, should be available at newsstands and larger Librarys. I will not copy and paste it here, they are aggressive about copy right infringments.
