Need All Terrain tire suggestions
I am going to need new tires in about 6K, and I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions. I am currently running Bridgestone Dueller 691 AT's, but I bought my truck used and tires were nearly worn out(I've only put 3K on them). With the tires being this worn, I can't tell how well they pull in the mud, but the do ride nice on the highway. I am looking for an All Terrain tire that pulls well in the mud/sand (messy situations), but also that rides/handles good on wet/dry pavement, is relativley quiet and that gets pretty good milage (pref. about 50K). I could read "test results", but I would rather have some input from people who know from 1st hand experience(looking at sizes from 265-305/75/16).

My experience with my first truck was very good with BFG All Terrains. Good all around performance. I live in the tropics (no snow).

The BFGs are great tires but when I got mine I went out on a limb and went with the Pro Comp ATs. After putting 4000 miles on them in 3 weeks (this includes some ugly off-roading) I REALLY like them.
They are a thousand times better than the POS Goodyears that I had and they have a 50K mile tread warranty that I think BFG doesn't have. They were also considerably less expensive. $140/each for 3 and get the 4th one free. Oh yeah, that is for 305/70R16.
The only drawback is their tire selection. If you are stuck on 285s, BFG all the way, but the 305s are really nice!
Good luck!

BFG All terrains or MT's.....depending on how much highway driving you do. I had BFG's on my Ranger and they went ANYWHERE. I had MT's on it, and the road noise might be too much for some. The AT's are what are going on my F150 this week. BFG's last longer than anything, and with their awesome sidewalls, a cut is far less likely to "cut" into your fun! Cheers!
BFG's !!!!! They are a little pricey $$$$$ And dealers aren't able to drop below a specific price. They are the KING!
I have been in the snow w/them and they do quite well. They arne't self cleaners (like the MT's).
Low noise and handle great on dry pavement.
Hope this helped.

I kinda figured that most would recommend the BFG's, and I think they are a great tire also, but I just don't care for the tread design on them. i know this may seem weird, but I am one of these people that has to like the way the tread on the tire looks. Never-the-less, I am seriously considering the BFG's.
TexasAG,
How do the Pro Comp.'s handle on the road--wet and dry. I will guess that they do pretty well in the mud--considering your comment about "ugly off-roading". Noisy?? I will have to say that I like the idea of having a tread-life warranty!!

While I can't argue the BFG suggections, I can recommend the Pirelli Scorpion A/T's. I
got a deal on the Pirelli's from Discount Tire when I put tires on my 97. They were great. Much better wet traction. Better in the mud, they didn't clog up. Pretty good in the snow as well. Great tire and an alternative to the BFG...may be cheaper as well.

I used to agree with the BFG hipe that everyone has to have, Seriously go out and look at the Bridgestone Dueler AT. 50,000 mile warranty and a much better looking tread design than the BFG. Quieter on the road and more agressive looking. Great tire and self cleaning in the mud.
Good luck

TJohnston,
Which Duellers are you talking about--I currently have the 691's (they have agood looking tread.. tread has 2 "squiggly" grooves around whoul tire). I have seen the new Duellers (I think they are the 693's) at tirerack.com. Are you reffering to either of these?
Farmboy,
I also looked hard at those Scorpion's b/c I LOVE the tread, but no one I have talked with has heard too much about them. How many miles have you put on them, and are they noisy?(I know that M/T's andA/T's tend to get noiser as they wear out) Handling properties been affected any?
Getting all info. I can to enable me to make the best selection... THANKS!!!

Would you guys recommend those BFG All-Terrain tires on a 2wd Ranger that needs a bit more grip in the snow and on ice?

Pat,
I Put the Pirelli's on my 97 at 46k because the stock GY crap had buldges and would not hold the road anymore in the wet. I owned the truck until last fall and had a little over 80k on it. So I had about 35k on the Pirelli's when I sold it. They looked like new and handled like new. I'd put them on my 2000 if they made a 17" tire.
I sold the truck to a friend and he is still running the same tires....not sure how many miles he has put on in a year, but a 10k guess would not be far off. They must have well over 40K on them. My buddy actually commented on the tires on the truck......most people never even notice tire grip and performance while driving. He plans to replace the Scorpions with another set and he is a pretty hard core off road/ BF Goodrich type.
FWIW...

Farmboy,
Has he or did you experience much/any road noise with those scorpions? On a post at tirerack.com, someone said that the tire is a great tire, but it was suprisingly noisy. Just askin'....
THANKS!!

Pat,
As they wore they got a bit noisier than when new. My Wrangler RS/T's were worse after the same mileage. I'd say no different than stock......probably better. These were also the first tires that I kept rotated (it was free), and I'm sure that helped to keep the wear down and the noise down.
BTW I had the LT 265/75-16 size.
THe last time I saw the truck was a bout 2 months ago. The wear looked great, and like I said he told me he was going to replace them with another set. He asked me where I got them.
