Must change speedo gear for warranty
Hi all, got the phone call from Aaron of Ford technical help from the Ford co., for you guys who upgrade from 16" to 17" with the tires more than 30" diameter must have the speedometer gear changed by a certified Ford tech. to honor warranty. They already had a bad experience with a Explorer with the upgrade and the ABS failed. He even try to set an appointment for me for July 20 to a dealer near me for the gear change. I guess it's for safety reasons. For you guys out there with big tires, please be careful and checked with your dealer tech. for advice if you didn't change the gear. I decided to change tires instead since I ordered the 275/60/17 last week. steve

I could be wrong but I think the 275/60/17 inch tires are exactly 30". We should be O.K. on that.

275/60-17s are 30" tires same as 255/70-16s.
If you had the 235/70-16s on it originally, they're only 29" dia, so your speedo, etc could be off. No idea how a small dia change like that affects ABS, but it seems unlikely that Ford would put themselves in a situation where changing to a factory optional tire dia would create a liability situation for them

I would have a couple of questions about that phone call:
1. How would the know you didn't change the speedo gear unless they took it out to count the teeth?
2. Whe a Ford certified mechanic? Here in Tucson we have shops that do nothing but speedometer that could simply do this change?
3.Do you think they are just trying to intimidate you so they can make a buck?
