54k Miles, Original Brakes Still Good
Having passed 50k miles and almost 6 years old, I took my truck in for brakes (assuming they must be getting thin). The shop called me back and said the front brakes were only 35% used up and the rear brakes were only 30% used. The rear drums needed re-surfacing, but the front rotors were still in spec.
The mechanic said this wasn't too surprising since I have a 5-speed. I was surprised since I frequently tow a 3000lb boat and have a 1200lb slide-in camper.
Anyone else with a 5-speed getting results like this?

CoolHandLuke,
Pretty impressive! I though my 85,000 (and still going) on the original brakes on my '01 Screw was pretty good. Maybe I'll still beat you. I'll take a close look at my pads when I replace my original tires in the next week or two.
However, my '90 Ranger which I bought new in January of that year and still drive, went 217,000 miles/13 years on the original front pads. That might be a record. Still has the original clutch, alternator, starter, power sterring pump. The inferior water pump "only" lasted to 215,000 miles. Has never had an alignment, but turned 89k on the original tires, 80k on the second set, and 61k and counting on the third set.
Paid $7700 +ttl for that truck. I think I got my money's worth.

It makes you feel good when you get a good one. Sounds like you did, and I think I do.

Well I guess I take the cake on this one. 106,000 miles before brakes. Admittedly I went a little too long and I had to have the rotors replaced at the same time. But that was only the fronts, rears were just fine and still had 50% life left. That was the only set of brakes I ever put on that 2000 f150, I traded it off with about 130k on it. So I figure $560 for brakes for the life of the truck, not too bad!
