Angry Can't keep Continentals balanced?

I bought a set of Continental Sport LT/SUV's in the stock size (275/60/17) at the end of last Sept. A few months after that I swapped the tires over to the FX-4 wheels I bought on ebay. The problem is that I've had to have them balanced at least four times since buying them. Now it's wobbling again?? I have kept them rotated, proper pressure, etc etc... What gives? These tires have an 80,000 mile treadware warranty, but I'm going to go nuts if this keeps up. Definitely my last set of Continentals, that's for sure. The GT-II's had less traction in the rain, but I only had to have them balanced once in the year and a half I had them. 99% percent of the time the shops just balance the fronts, then I rotate them and the wobble is back. Not sure what to do now???,,,,98

Same Problem w/Good Years

I have an 03 Super Crew 4x4 FX4 & have the same problem with Good Year tires. I have 16000 miles on them & have had them balanced 5 or 6 times & rotated every 5000 miles. Now the tires are "dishing" out on the front. I tried everything. I have another appointment at the dealership tomorrow.

It is not that uncommon to see the SUV all terrain style tires do just what you say they are doing. My tire man says that the cheaper a tire is the more commonplace this problem is. I was about to get some of the Continental Contitac 4x4's and he advised me to stay far far away from any Continental tire. I have also seen many not so high reviews on the tire rack website regarding both the tires you guys are running. The Michelin SUV/AT tires I understand are pretty awesome but they are also pretty costly IMO. I guess the old addage still holds true, we get what we pay for. I just replaced the old BS that put on from the factory with new 99 style chrome 18" lightning wheels and put the Nitto Extreme 404 285/50/18 on them and so far I gotta say I am very pleased with the tires.

I'm trying to think of what to say here. You're saying I need to spend out the azz in order to get a decent tire? No thanks man. Enjoy your overpriced tires and chrome rims ,,,,98

Tires

I thought about buying the same tires for my '02 S'crew, due to price & mileage. My son bought some for his Dodge and had the same problem you are haveing. Couldn't keep them balanced, finally took them off and bought Goelanders (really likes them). I went to Discount Tire & bought "Dominator Sport A/Ts in 265R70X16s and really like them. Running smoothafter 2000 miles. Good luck!

Exclamation

I went from hydroplaning no traction GT-II's, to non balancing Continentals. Not sure where to go next? I'm stuck with these for a while I guess. There's only about 15k on them now, if that.,,,,98

Hey 98Screamer,

You got me all wrong. I am a tight wad. I don't wanna spend more than I have to on anything. Why you think I am running the Nitto's??? Better than buying the Bridgestone or Goodyears at well over 200 per tire. I only gave 133 each with free shipping on the Nitto's which I thought was a great deal for a Z rated performance tire that is 11.5" wide. Heck the Kumho's are only like 98 bucks apiece in the 18" and I would have gotten them if they made them in the size I wanted. Just saying there are other options with the other tires. Oh and I agree 1,000,000,000 times over with you on some tires being WAY WAY WAY overpriced.

Tightwads don't normally buy chrome rims and Nitto tires. No problem, I got a different feeling from your post than you were trying to convey, I guess...,,,,98

$133 a tire for Nittos? Does seem like a major deal. The continentals were only ten bucks less per tire?

This has probably been tried already but did you try to increase or decrease air pressure?

Lightbulb

I was running them at 40 pounds when I started, and lowered them to 35 all around a month or three ago. Didn't seem to make a difference. Should I go higher or lower? I am enjoying the lower pressure, rides MUCH nicer now,,,,98

Ouch, 40 psi is rough on the kidneys. Did it wobble less with the higher pressure? I would both raise it and lower it to see if the air pressure affects it in any way.

Good luck.

Hey Screamer,

You'd be surprised at what I paid for the rims and all four tires. 600 for the rims (99 lightning's 18") and 600 for the tires mounted and balanced. Trust me when I say it was after long hard thinking that I even decided to get them. Only way that I could justify it was that at the price I paid for them I could always get my money back out of the if I ever sell the truck. Of, course I don't think that will ever happen.

$1200 for 18's and tires, they charged you $68 for mounting and balance. Sounds a bit steep. but not by much.,,,,98

I didn't think it was too bad actually, since they charged me 8 bucks to pay the EPA robbing SOB's and they used the stick on weights and chrome valve stems. Oh, the reason why they charged me the 8 bucks was because I also had them remove the old tires off the stock rims to save me storage space. I figure I can sell the stock aluminums for a couple hundred and then I really won't have too much $$ in the new set.

I had the same problem with a set of Pirelli Norseman LT26575R16's that I got from Discount Tire. Even though I faithfully rotated & balanced every 5k miles, the tires were impossible to balance after 2 years (24k miles).

Discount Tire gave me a very generous "trade-in" for the Pirelli's when I upgraded to Michelin LTX M/S. I also dropped down to LT24575's because I suspected that part of the balance problem might be the larger diameter. I love these Michelin's!
