Wobble Phenomena

Scream, I have this wobble thing as well on my 98 SC XLT 4x4, 150K. I had goodyears at first, then new dunlops, all balanced again and again, but the wobble still existed. The wheels are mint, no damage, and they are not throwing off or shifting any weights. Only after countless tire rotations I was able to find an arrangement that was almost wobble free at 70mph. Don't know why, maybe some sort of inherent vibration cancellation thing, who knows.

I marked the one lug and the corresponding rim bolt hole in each of the 4 wheels (kind of like a trail of breadcrumbs back to nirvanna) so as not to lose this arrangement during future rotations. I hate the wobble thing. I also added dampers to the exhaust system similar to what is on the 03 model.

Good luck.

Well, I hate to bring this back up, but it's still going on. Each time I get them balanced, the person doing it says the person before them didn't know what the hell they were doing. I watched each time they got balanced, and every single tire was sitting on 0's across the face of the machine. This time when they put one of them up on the machine it was off by 1.50 ounces. They were balanced at 0 on the 2nd or 3rd or December. How can it be that far off after that short of a time? No weights were missing from the last time, and it was balanced according to that machine? What gives?

I just got a balance and rotation today, and it seems to be better for the time being. The strangest part of all this, is that it's intermittent. I took a drive today before the balancing, to and from downtown Tampa via the toll road. On the trip there the wheel was wobbling back and forth up to a half inch or more. On the way back it was like a new truck. It was firmly set on center, and not one hint of wobble. I have replaced everything on the front end except the pitman arm. I am beginning to think I have a slight tread seperation, or something to that effect going on. Once these wear out I am buying a set of Michelin LTX's, and never looking at another brand again.,,,,98

The last thing I am going to check is the wheel bearings, if this happens again. After that, these tires are going to a recycler.

Buy your tires at Costco. Then you can take them back no matter how many miles you have on them.

Hey Screamer, you're in Tampa now? If you like i'll make you a deal on some Goodyear Eagle II's I just took off my truck today. I had a sidewall puncture on the RR Friday and the LR has a slight vibration but the two I took off the front are in excellent shape. Probably 70% of the tread left.

I ended up whipping out the plastic and getting 4 new Michelin Cross Terrains. 275/60-17 is a difficult size, TireRack only lists 18 choices and of those only 3 are worth putting on my truck. I narrowed it down to the Michelins or the Yokohama Geolanders. Got the Michelins for $800 inclusive.

Here's a couple pics showing the old tires.
