f150 4x2 tire size info needed

I have a 98 f150 4x2 that came stock with 255-70r-16 tires. I want to keep the stock rims and put a tire size that is wider looking. What size do you suggest and how wide or big can I go without stressing the tranny. I mainly drive highway miles and tow a boat a few times a year.

thanks
Blaine

You didn't mention what engine you had, but as an example, I run 285/60R18's on mine and have no problems with the size. You should be good to go with about anything you can fit on your stock rims. Good luck.

I had 265/75R16 on my 4.6 and they were fine. I now am running 35'5 but on aftermaket rims(need new gears though). You can run 285 fine on stock rims with no problem. towing may be a problem with larger tires though. Gears can take care of that but that would be about $800. If you have any ?'s feel free to PM me.

I have 265/70/16 on the stock polished aluminum rims

tire dealer said I could go as wide as 275 on factory... but personally, I wouldnt go any wider than 265 on 2WD 16" factory rims

now the STX 17" rims and the FX4 17" rims come from the factory with 275's and 265's... so you could go really wide on those
