Thumbs up Front brakes replaced

It was easy and simple, all you need is a 1/2" wrench, a c-clamp and a bleeder wrench 7/16(?) it took me 1/2 hour. Thanks ford for something so simple to do.Ford wanted 144.95 i did it for 44.10

hay guy

what was the bleeder wrench for

all you needed was to push the piston in with the c clamp

your right no need to machine the rotors unless you get a vibration

The wrench was to open the bleeder and push in the pistons so no damage would occur to the anti-lock brake system... the rotors were fine no problems!!!!

Buckdropper- do you have a micrometer? Because when i did my front brakes i had to replace my rotors, not just turn them but replace them because you cannot turn them, it will be too small for specs. My teacher said that lots of new cars and trucks today you cannot turn the rotors anymore, just replace them. Ill have to find the manual and repost what the min. thickness for front rotors are for your 97.

Unless you know if your rotors were still in spec, sorry to tell you you might have to check on that after you are already done.

Cool

If i had to turn them i would have replaced them. But as they are now they are in spec and not below. I do agree that they can only be turned one time maybe!!. Next brake job i will replace them. When i had it in at ford they siad they could turn them and install pads for 145.$$$ (NOT). I did them myself and had fun doing it. I work with fine tolerances every day we make pellets for reactors.............(mic)

Buckdropper-Thats good, i hoped you checked on that before you did the job first. I too had fun with my brakes, i put on new rotors though, i got a student discount so i did the front rotors and pads for about 100 bucks. Pretty good deal if you ask me.

It took some banging, turning, jerking, spraying and cursing......but eventually they came off. I had a harder time (100X harder) trying to get the 2 bolts off that hold the calipers on. I could NOT get them out. I stripped the heads and I would say it took me 40 minutes on the drivers side and about 20 minutes on the passenger side. I was pretty pissed !!!

Question Buckdropper, how about the rear pads...

...are these as easy to replace as the front? I have a '97 Expedition w/fwdb and the pads are getting thin both front and rear.

Thank you!

The backs are just as easy if and i repeat if the rear drums come off without a problem, they sometimes rust and a little gentle persuasion is needed. If they come off easy then its a piece of cake. good luck we are here if you need help.

Jvangel: that's so funny, I had the EXACT same problem when I did my front brakes. I was beginning to worry about my abilities, I mean, c'mon, how hard can a pair of bolts really be on there? Don't answer, I know, pretty damn tight. When you put them back on, did you make sure a gob of anti-seize went on those bolts?

Same with the back too, rust kept them stuck, but a bit of banging, spraying, etc... they came off.

anyway, I'm just glad I'm not the only one who had that problem with the pad braket on the calipers.
