I have a couple of questions.
I have a 1999 F150 2x4 supercab with 4 wheel anti-loc disc breaks. I have done plenty of break jobs on standard disc breaks but never on an anti-loc system.

When I picked up the breaks (Wagner semi-metalic) the guy behind the counter told me to open the bleeder valve when compressing the pistons to prevent damage to the anti loc system.

He also said that since the parking break was part of the rear calliper and that a special tool was required to compress the piston. He letting me use one free however is there anythig I should be aware of?

The Hayne's book does not mention any of this.

Any suggestions/Guidence would be greatly appreciated.

I tried to e-mail you but it was kicked back. I am going to change the rear disc pads this weekend. Is there anything I need to be aware of, anything tricky? I did the front with no problem but I never did rear discs before, always drums.
Thanks

here is a question for ya. Why does it seem that the front break pads dont last very long? I just did my front brakes Saturday beacuse the warning clip on one side started sqeeling friday. I only have 28,800 miles on the factory brakes. From what I have read so far it is pretty normal for them to wear out at this point.

Hey f150freak,
Mine lasted to 32,000,I guess I got good use out of them. The rotors started warping at that mileage, and the pedal vibrated like it was made by Homedics ,,,,98

This is going to sound very very stupid of me...but, how can you be 100% sure that you have 4-wheel ABS. I know I can feel the front lock and unlock on a panic stop. I thought that since the front does it the back probably should too as I know from my dads truck that Ford started using ABS on the rear first. Also, I wanted to make sure that you have to open the bleeder screw when chaning front pads. I never opened the bleeder on any other vehicle I have had and no harm came to them but, of corse they were non-abs too.

Here's my question:
I have a 97' F150 with rear ABS/ drums. On more than one occasion I was traveling a little too fast for traffic and had to slam on the brakes! To my surprise the rear end locked up and kicked out to the side a little until I let up..I have also notice in the snow I could lock up all four tires and slide. How can this be with ABS even if it is only in the rear. I never felt any pedal vibration. Is my system working correctly? The ABS light only comes on for a second when I start the truck but then it goes off after the system check is completed. I would apprciate it if you could help me out. I would rather not pay the dealer $75 to tell me my system is working fine.

Cool

2winturbo: My ranger had rear abs. It got to be intermittant as the truck got old. There was a big difference when it worked and when it didn't. The rear end never came around when it worked, but would when it was off. And my light did stay on when it wasn't working.

Question

I was going to do my rear brakes (drums and shoes). I need to know what "spring release" tools are necessary to make it an easy change. The haynes manual mentions a couple tools, but I need clarification....Thanks
