New pads. Slight burning smell normal??
Just put new pads and rotors on my 2wd 97 F150 and drove about 45mins with little braking. Checked the rotors when I arrived and they were quite hot with a small burning(pad) smell. Is this normal when new? The calipers did not appear to be sticking but when I installed the new stuff and turned the rotors by hand before installing the tires there was a slight resistance but I thought it was normal.
Gareyc,
Most of the time this is normal. Most vehicles will smell burnt or even smoke, for ! the first 100 miles or so. Usually, you are the grease, skin oins, paints, and any other treatemnts off the brakes.
My Faince's S10 smoked and smelled burnt for ~20 miles, until they got broke iin.
My '97 was just changed on Friday, although I did not notice the burn or smoke. It also depends on how clean everything is, as well as who makes your pads. Mine are Bendix. SO far, they seem OK.
Hope this helps!

If you can grab the wheel with one hand and roll it and have it roll 1/2 to 1 turn by itself, then you're probably o.k..
Brakes can emit an odor while they're burnishing in.
Proper burnishing takes a couple hundred yellow-light-at-30-mph stops.
It is common (and injurious) for a caliper to hang (grab too hard) -- which will eventually kill the lining.
If both wheels have minimal drag (above method) -- give it a week and report back.
