Need a little advice on Fuel Filter changing--->
Im gona change my fuel filter tomorrow and im wondering if theres anything i need to know. Im just concerned about the gas flow from the gas tank. When i pull the filter off, will it run continiously out or do i need to do something to stop the flow?

One piece of advise, look under your truck to see which filter you have. Then when you get it , make sure it is the right one. I can't find a filter that is exactly like my oem. THe ones the part guys give me are literally twice the size of my oem, and I cant find the right one. I have not tried ford yet but I will next time I change. One more thing dont worry about gas continually running out it will stop you will lose probably .5 gal. at most. Just be ready to slap the other filter on when you remove the original if you are worried about losing very much.
make sure you relive the pressure at the line...
pull the fuel pump fuse and try to start the truck..when you go under make sure you have he proper tools (a screw driver to pry back the mounting clip, and the disconnect tools for the lines)...a couple of really absorbant towels don't hurt either because fuel that is trapped in the line and the filter is gonna run out and you can take the towels away from the area when the flow stops instead of having to lay in a puddle of gas(not good)...also don't make the mistake that has occured before by working in your closed garage and then the water heater kicks in and you have an explosion(not good either, tends to **** mama off when the house is in flames)
Just need the fuel filter tool, and a couple absorbent towels. The 97's have a larger fuel filter (diameter). My 2001 has a fuel filter about half the diameter of the 97's. The bracket is easy for me to release on my 2001.
Yes, relieve the fuel pressure. While the engine is running, push the fuel cutoff button in the passenger side footwell. The engine will die. one time one another car I didn't relieve the fuel pressure and I had a gallon of gas I collected in a bucket.
Get the quick release fitting tools at the auto parts store as mentioned also and verify your diameter. I purchased one that was too large also. The wrong part number in the box.

get the better tool, it's worth it
Make sure to get the best tool you can. I went cheap and crushed the internal springs and had one heck of a time getting the filter off.

I just changed mine a couple weeks ago, so the agony is still fresh in my mind.
I removed the gas cap and that was it. There was some gas that ran out of the lines and from the filter itself, but not more than a half pint or so.
The rear gas line released easily; the front would not, plus there are two other lines that run right over the filter and mount, so access to the front gas line fitting was a PITA to get at. Finally removed the freakin' filter assy from the frame (two small bolts) and of course, then the front clamp released almost by itself.
Then, getting the old filter out of the clamp thingie proved to be even worse. The thing seems to be spring steel and I ended up destroying the old filter removing it. Sheesh, it shouldn't be this difficult.
If you haven't gotten a fitting tool yet, get the "pliers" type rather than just the plastic rings; mush easier to use, I think.
Putting it back together was much easier.
So, something that should have taken 15 minutes took me an hour.

Can't add much more to the above. It's a PITA, but it's dooable. One thing I did was spray WD40 into the clips. Mine had dried up sand inside and the tool would not seat properly. Once I did that, those clips released just fine.
I have to agree on how that filter is held in. I basically destroyed the old one getting it out. The new one just snapped back in, but man, they did not want that thing to come out easily!

well i couldnt get the dam thing off and i didnt want to break nothin so i drove it down to the station right down the road and had one of the guys pop it off and install the other one. We were lookin at hte old one and it was all mangled from having to be pried off. haha. Well after oil and iflter change, MAF cleaning, K*N cleaning, the 4.6 doesnt ping and runs smoother than when it was new. Tomorrow--coolant! Thanks again guys!
