4.6 4wd Overral Mlg 15 Over 2 Yrs

Well after about 3 years of documenting mileage; empy, full, hwy, city, towing, etc., I'm getting 15 mpg overrall. Low being around 12-13 towing 2 ATV's, high almost 19 on a long road trip. Bought with 43K and now has about 63K.

Should have opted for the 5.4!! Next time, I guess...

I drive a little aggresively from stops, but I'm getting the exact same milage from my 4.6 both for the average aswell as your high and low (with a lighter truck.) I'd emagine if you had gotten the 5.4 you would be in the 12-13 mpg range alongside everyoen else.

After hearing about the 5.4 spark plug problems I think my next ford truck will be a F250 with 6.0 Deisel.

I have had my 2000 5.4 s/c 4x4 for 3 years and 23,000 miles. I also documented my mileage from 0 miles and I have averaged 14.4 mpg driving it hard, with a little towing using 4wd in winter with mostly driving it back and forth to work about 25 mile round trip. My highest was 18.2 on a road trip and my lowest was about 12.5 towing about 3000lbs at 80 mph.

If someone gets 12-15mph average with the 4.6L, they should have gotten the 5.4L. The engine would not be working as hard, less throttle used to accomplish the same thing. I get 12-16mpg except one 90% 4wd high tank over 60k miles with a 5.4L 3.73gear. Towing a couple thousand pounds crusing at 80mph+, still 14-15mpg. Now i'll never get the 20mpg some people have gotten unloaded, but this is a truck with a V8. It can't get more than my cars.

I've owned a '00, '01, and my current '02 F-150 SCab 4x4 with the 5.4, and they all have averaged the same mileage as my similarly equipped '99 with the 4.6.

I'm looking forward to the 3-valve 5.4 which should get better mileage with more power and a flatter torque curve.
